[edit] Music and themes
Orphaned Land fuse doom and death metal metal as well as Moroccan folk music and tradition. The eastern influences tend to overrun the heavy metal roots of the music, either attracting or alienating listeners.
The band's first album was Sahara (1994), originally a demo. The second album, El Norra Alila (1996), had even more of an eastern/oriental influence, including the addition of songs with traditional oriental Jewish piyyut and Arab melodies. This album conveyed a message of co-existence between Jews and Muslims.
The third album, Mabool: The Story of the Three Sons of Seven (the Hebrew name for the Deluge, depicted in the Bible and Noah's story), 2004, was in the making for seven years. The album tells the story of three sons (one for each monotheistic religion) which try to warn humanity from a coming flood as punishment for their sins. Musically, the album contains oriental instruments, two choruses, traditional Yemenite chants sung by Shlomit Levi and quotes of Biblical verses from the story of the deluge, read by vocalist Kobi Farhi.
Orphaned Land are currently working on the follow-up to Mabool, titled The Never Ending Way Of ORwarriOR. OrWarrior means "Warrior of Light", and the concept will be about the battle between light and darkness.
