Rhett Bomar (born July 2, 1985 in Groesbeck, Texas) is an American football quarterback. He played for the University of Oklahoma Sooners and was permanently dismissed from the team for breaking NCAA rules in 2006. Bomar is currently enrolled at Sam Houston State University in hopes of continuing his college football career.[1]
Bomar was a three year starter in high school and was coached by his father Jerry Bomar at Grand Prairie High School. He was ranked as the nation's No. 1 quarterback of 2004 by recruiting service Rivals.com and got compared to former NFL great John Elway.[2] He threw for 1,272 yards and rushed for 547 yards as a senior. Despite receiving numerous scholarship offers (including a full scholarship offer to play at Virginia Tech before ever playing a down of high school football), Bomar committed to Oklahoma in February 2004. He redshirted his first year at Oklahoma but became the starter by the second game of the season the next year. His season started roughly while he adjusted to college football but his game seemed to improve throughout the season and he was the MVP of the Holiday Bowl when Oklahoma defeated the Oregon Ducks.
On August 2, 2006, Bomar was dismissed from the team by OU head coach Bob Stoops.[3] It was reported that he received payments for work not completed from Big Red Sports and Imports, a car dealership owned at that time by a large University of Oklahoma donor, a violation of NCAA rules. Senior Paul Thompson began the year as starting QB, backed up by true freshman Sam Bradford and junior college transfer Joey Halzle.
It was announced March 19, 2007 that Bomar will enter spring practices as the starting Quarterback for the 2007 Bearkats with two years of collegiate eligibility remaining.
"Rhett brings a lot of athleticism to the quarterback position that we haven’t had," SHSU coach Todd Whitten told the Huntsville Item. "He's going to get a chance to get a lot of reps this spring. We feel like our offense has the chance to make a lot of big plays next year."
