sidux is a desktop oriented Linux distribution based on the "unstable" Debian branch called Sid. The distribution consists of a Live-CD (bootable CD-ROM) for i686 or amd64 architecture with which sidux also can be installed to a harddrive through a graphical installer. The maintainers of sidux are a team working with former Kanotix developer Stefan Lippers-Hollmann (slh) and the sidux Foundation, Inc. located in the United States.

[edit] Releases
The first distribution of sidux was established in November 2006 by former Kanotix developers who built a script that changes a Kanotix or Debian install to sidux without having to download any further CD ISOs (disk images). Nonetheless in January 2007 a CD followed, labeled "preview".
The current release called "Χάος" (all following releases will have the names of ancient Greek Gods) was released on the 21 February 2007.[1] Further releases are planned to follow about every three months.
[edit] Software
The default graphical desktop environment of sidux is KDE. Though the developers come from Kanotix, sidux was completely overhauled, with a focus on the live mode, the installer and the scripts for installing proprietary drivers. This includes drivers for NVIDIA and ATI 3D graphic cards and some ISDN and WLAN cards. sidux does not only rely on pure Debian Sid but also is completely Open Source.
sidux does not contain full multimedia support for DVD players and mp3 encoders because of licensing restrictions. Mp3 Decoding (playing) has been implemented, as has the movie player Kaffeine. The missing multimedia packages can be added through the Debian apt system (the necessary sources.list entry is available through the support IRC-Chat group) after sidux is installed to a hard drive.
The sidux concept also contains the use of so called meta-packages [2] to install additional software. There are meta-packages for security, graphics, games, educational software and to provide support for older computers. Meta-packages install several applications which belong to a certain group of software for a special computer use.
The default language of sidux is English but there are translations for other languages including German, Italian, Spanish and French. The CD ISO contains only the English and German translations, but other translations for the GUI may be added after installation.
