Welcome to my userpage!

Hey. My name is Nick and I live near Jackson, Michigan. I am currently studying Computer Science and Geographic Information Science as an undergraduate student at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. I am originally from Iowa but I don't really consider my self an "Iowan" since I left there when I was two. I've lived in Michigan ever since and hope to get the hell out of this state soon :)

Map Requests & Information

Maps that I develop for Wikipedia are created in ArcMap, part of the ArcGIS 9 suite. I have data available to me in a wide range of disciplines. Transportation networks, population relationships, federal lands, lakes & rivers, cities, counties, states and countries.

If you're looking for a map, ask about it on my talk page and I'll see what I can do!

Cartography & Transportation Networks

I've always been a roadgeek. Turns out I really enjoy developing maps, too. The two really work well together. As I indicated in my intro, I'm studying GIS and it has turned out to be far more interesting than I had imagined. I use ArcGIS 9 to create maps for Wikipedia.

Since July 2006 I've uploaded almost 500 maps to the Commons. I have the capability to create a map of just about anything whether it be transportation networks, county maps, population density, lakes, rivers, forests, federal land, and more! If you are looking for a map for an article on the Wikipedia, leave a request on my talk page and I'll see if it can be done and get back with you!

Wikipedia Projects

I'm currently involved in a few transportation related projects. My main task in these projects is developing maps and completing the infoboxes for the related articles.

For the U.S. Roads project I designed maps for all the primary U.S. Routes which can be found at the Commons under the Maps of U.S. Routes Category.
For the U.S. Interstate Highway Project I've designed maps for all the primary Interstates from I-4 to I-99 which are available at the Commons as well.
On July 22, 2006 I finished mapping all of the Michigan State Highway routes from M-1 through M-553 they are also available at the Commons

Travel

Among my many interests, travel probably tops the list. I especially enjoy road trips, the more spontaneous the better. Earlier this year in March, a friend and myself drove from Michigan to San Francisco, CA and back in 8 days. In August I will be making a road trip to Las Vegas and returning through Utah stopping at Zion National Park, Arches National Monument and Monument Valley continuing through Colorado in I-70 to catch I-80 and come back home.

I've visited the following states: Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska and South Dakota.

Some sights I've seen in the United States: Sleeping Bear Dunes, Mackinac Bridge, Mackinac Island, Tahquamenon Falls, Whitefish Point, Chicago, Meteor Crater in Arizona, Grand Canyon, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Coit Tower, Yellowstone National Park, Devil's Tower, Seven Falls, Badlands, Cave of the Winds and Mount Rushmore.

Outside of the United States I've visited many cities in Spain including Barcelona, Madrid, Córdoba, Málaga, Toledo, Seville, and Costa del Sol. During my trip to Spain I also crossed the Strait of Gibraltar to visit Tangier, Morocco.

Programming

Programming is a major interest of mine. I taught myself to program using Microsoft QBasic in 1995. Ever since then I've bounced from language to language. I'm currently learning the finer intricacies of the C++ language during my studies at Central Michigan University. If I recall correctly, after I learned QBasic I started dabbling online using IRC. I originally taught myself the scripting language built into the pIRCh IRC client and later the mIRC IRC Client. Concurrently I taught myself HTML and began designing web pages, and still do, in Notepad.

Soon after I forayed into the world of Visual Basic, while at the same time exploring Miva. Over time I've developed knowledge in PHP and MySQL as a result and even some java and javascript. Over time it becomes easier and easier to transition to a new language as once one understands the thought process behind computer programming, it's just a matter of noting the particular syntax of a certain language and familiarizing yourself with their particular nuances. The rest is pretty much the same.
