Subdivisions of India

India is divided into a hierarchy of nested administrative units:
- States and Territories
- Divisions (bangla: bihag)
- Districts (zilla)
- In certain states, Sub-Divisions (pargana, anuvibhag) headed by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate:
- states with Sub-Divisions include Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tripura and Uttar Pradesh
- Tehsils or Talukas headed by a Tehsildar or Talukdar
- Mandal
- Mandal Praja Parishads
- Revenue divisions

- Development Block
- comprises all the villages in the tehsil
- Gram Groups
- groups of villages with combined population exceeding 500—a large village is effectively a Gram Group unto itself—each large village and each Gram Group has its own Gram Panchayat

- governed by Municipal Corporations for large urban areas, Municipal Councils for smaller urban areas, and Nagar Panchayats for suburban areas
