[edit] Biography
Vasile Cârlova was born in 1809 to an average boyar family, in Buzău. After his parents' death, in 1816, he was adopted by an aunt and moved to Craiova. He studied together with Grigore Alexandrescu, learning Greek and French.
In 1827, he wrote his first poem, Păstorul întristat (The Sad Shepperd), which was subsequently published in 1830, with the help of Ion Heliade Rădulescu. A year later, he wrote Ruinurile Târgoviştei (The Ruins of Târgovişte) and Rugăciune (Prayer). In 1829, he wrote Înserare (Nightfall).
In 1830, the year when his poems were published, he enlisted to the newly-created Romanian National Militia, a nucleus of the future Romanian army, as its 33rd volunteer, bearing the rank of second lieutenant.
In 1831, Cârlova wrote Marşul românilor (The Romanians' March), a patriotic poem that could not be printed due to censorship and circulated on sheets of paper.
Unfortunately, in 1831 he grew sick of an infectious disease and died on September 18.
