El cantante de Iron Maiden, Paul Di'Anno deja la banda debido a sus problemas con la bebida. Es reemplazado por Bruce Dickinson. El primer álbum de Iron Maiden con Bruce Dickinson, The Number of the Beast, se convierte en el primer disco heavy metal en alcanzar el número uno en las listas musicales del Reino Unido.
A finales de 1982, el batería Clive Burr de Iron Maiden abandona la banda en términos amistosos, debido a que no podía lidiar con las fechas programadas para la gira del álbum The Number of the Beast. Es reemplazado por Nicko McBrain.
El guitarrista de Motörhead "Fast" Eddie Clarke deja el grupo y es reemplazado por el ex-Thin Lizzy Brian Robertson.
El disco Metal Health de Quiet Riot se convierte en el primer disco heavy meteal en alcanzar el número 1 en las listas musicales de Estados Unidos.

El 27 de septiembre, Cliff Burton, bajista de Metallica, muere a los 25 años en un accidente de autocar en Suecia.
Bon Jovi edita el álbum Slippery When Wet con el cual se lanzan al estrellato, alcanzando gran popularidad en América, Europa y Asia.
El 30 de octubre, el guitarrista de Europe, John Norum, abandona el grupo amigablente, para empezar más adelante su carrera en solitario. En su lugar entra Kee Marcello.
El disco The final countdown de Europe vende cerca de 2,5 millones de discos y alcanza el número uno en 26 países.

Brian Welch deja Korn después de convertirse al cristianismo.
Dimebag Darrell, miembro de Damageplan y Pantera es asesinado el 8 de diciembre por Nathan Gale mientras realizaba un concierto en Ohio (Estados Unidos).
Van Halen recupera a Sammy Hagar (que abandonó en 1996) y realizan la gira de su segundo álbum de grandes éxitos, The Best Of Both Worlds. Después de la gira, Hagar declara que ha terminado con Van Halen.

La cantante Tarja Turunen es despedida de Nightwish.
El batería Thomas Stauch deja Blind Guardian por discrepancias musicales y forma el grupo Savage Circus. El batería es substituido por Frederik Ehmk.
Krzysztof "Doc" Raczkowski, baterista de la banda polaca de death metal Vader entre los años 1988 al 2005, muere el 20 de agosto.
David Wayne, vocalista de Metal Church entre 1981 y 1989, muere el 10 de mayo.
Se celebra en la ciudad de México la primera edición del Live N Louder, el 8 de Octubre en el Palacio de los deportes.

Lordi gana el Festival de la Canción de Eurovisión con la canción Hard Rock Hallelujah.
Bon Jovi se convierte en la primera banda de Hard Rock y Metal en ganar el premio a la música Country.
Rhapsody tiene problemas con el copyright del nombre del grupo y cambia su nombre oficialmente a Rhapsody of Fire.
Jon Nodtveidt, líder de la banda noruega Dissection, se suicida el 18 de agosto.
Jared Anderson, ex-bajista de las agrupaciones de death metal Hate Eternal y Morbid Angel, fallece el 14 de octubre.
Jesse Pintado, guitarrista de Terrorizer y ex-Napalm Death, fallece el 27 de agosto.
Sabine Dünser, vocalista de Elis fallece de una hemorragia cerebral. Es reemplazada a finales de año por Sandra Schleret.
El 14 de noviembre se lleva a cabo la ceremonia del UK Music Hall of Fame en la cual Led Zeppelin y Bon Jovi son las bandas de Rock pesado en entrar al Salón de la Fama.
El 6 de diciembre, Metallica lanza su DVD The Videos, una compilación de los videoclips de la banda desde One de 1989.
También el 6 de diciembre, es anunciado en el sitio oficial de la banda alemana Rage, que el batería Mike Terrana dejaba la banda por diferencias musicales y personales, así como para ampliar sus horizontes musicales. Fue reemplazado por André Hilgers.
