[edit] Introduction
In professional wrestling, a first blood match is occasionally used at Pay-Per-Views. The rules are very simple, do whatever you can in order to make your opponents head bleed. These matches have no disqualifications, so weapons are almost always used to win the match and you can't get counted out.
[edit] Memorable First Blood Matches
The first blood match is very rare in World Wrestling Entertainment. There are two first blood matches that currently stand out to all others in World Wrestling Entertainment. There are many more in World Championship Wrestling and Extreme Championship Wrestling (before becoming a part of World Wrestling Entertainment).
- Steve Austin vs. Kane- This match was contested in a cage, with first blood rules and took place at the 1998 King Of The Ring for the WWF Championship. Kane made Austin bleed after The Undertaker interfered and struck him with a chair.
- Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker- This match was at Fully Loaded on July 25th, 1999. Steve Austin won the match.
[edit] Video Game History
In the video game world, the first blood match was first introduced in the SmackDown! series, in the fifth game in the series, Here Comes The Pain. At first the match was very entertaining for fans of wrestling games, but eventually the match became very boring and was not used as much. The first blood match was in every SmackDown! game after that, including all three SmackDown vs. Raw games, but the match is hardly ever used by fans now. THQ, the creators of the SmackDown! series, believe that the first blood match is not used much because of it's rarity in World Wrestling Entertainment, and also because it doesn't have something that stands out to make it a unique match, like some of the other matches in the SmackDown! series, like the Buried Alive and Elimination Chamber matches.
[edit] Latest First Blood Match
The last first blood match was held at the 2006 Survivor Series, the match was a SmackDown! match between Undertaker and Mr. Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy won the match when Montel Vontavious Porter interfered with a steel chair. He swung the chair in Kennedy's direction, only to have him duck, allowing the chair to hit Undertaker and make his forehead bleed. It is still unknown who Montel Vontavious Porter was aiming for as he and Mr. Kennedy had been in tag team matches together before, but had their differences. It could have been a plan made between the two, or Montel Vontavious Porter expected Kennedy to duck, if not them two, then the only other possible explanation is that he meant to hit Kennedy, and did not expect Kennedy to duck out of the way.
