Five News
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Five News is the news division of British broadcaster Five. It is produced by Sky News.
From 1 January 2005, Sky News was awarded the contract to provide the news for Five, replacing ITN, which had provided the channel's news service from the channel's launch.

[edit] History
"Channel 5 news", as it was then known, was one of the new station's flagship programmes when it launched on 30 March 1997. It was originally produced by ITN, which at the time also provided the news for Channel 4 and ITV. It was announced on 9 March 2004 that Sky had won the new contract to provide Five with its news bulletins. [1]
The first Sky-produced bulletin was meant to be on Monday 3rd January 2005 but the Boxing Day tsunami meant it premiered two days earlier in a short Saturday evening update. [2]
It has pioneered a number of innovations in style, format and content of news and won numerous awards in its early years. [3] These include:
• Afternoon and Evening updates on the hour, every hour
• A 'ticker' during these updates
• A presenter standing up or 'perching' rather than sitting behind a desk [1]
• On air 'teases' from production staff
• Live discussions involving variously experts, campaigners, celebrities and political commentators
• Guest editors - these included Ms Dynamite, Dame Kelly Holmes, Howard Marks and Alastair Campbell
• Your News [2], a segment of most bulletins given over to viewers' videos and now adapted by many other news programmes under the banner 'user-generated content' [4]
• On-screen email addresses for reporters while they're on air (a feature previously seen in newspapers)
[edit] Anchors
The main newsreaders on relaunch were: lead anchor Kirsty Young (who previously presented ITN's Five News programmes), Helen Fospero, Kate Gerbeau and Barbara Serra. However, Barbara Serra left to join Al Jazeera English and was replaced by Priya Kaur-Jones. She in turn left and has been replaced by Asha Tanna from the BBC.
John Suchet joined to fill in for Kirsty Young only while she was on maternity leave, but secured a permanent role on her return. Kirsty and John now split the week in presenting the evening shows. Faye Barker is a freelance reporter/newsreader and can often be seen presenting the late evening updates as well as the occasional lunchtime show. [3]
[edit] Other correspondents/presenters
Catherine Jones is a reporter and relief presenter, while Lara Lewington has been the weather presenter since January, 2003.
Five News's political editor is Andy Bell who, along with Catherine Jones, has been with the channel through both its ITN and Sky News periods.
Jason Farrell is Five News's inaugural Crime Correspondent, though often reports on many other stories including sport, when he can often be seen on the sofa on a Friday evening when five's regular Sports Reporter Alex Thomas is away.
Catherine Jacob is the Royal Correspondent.
Peter Lane is the Northern Correspondent, having previously worked at Channel 5 News at ITN before leaving for the BBC.
Others include Jonathan Samuels, Ruth Liptrot, Leyla Hayes and Jane Dougall. Five News also often use Sky News' own correspondents for certain matters.
[edit] News programmes
Currently, Five News has three weekday news editions:
- A morning edition broadcast at 11:30am
- An early evening edition broadcast at 5:30pm
- A mid-evening edition broadcast at 7:00pm
[edit] Trivia
- Five is unique among the main 5 terrestrial networks, broadcasting regular Five News headline updates throughout the day.
- Five News has also pioneered different ways of presenting the news, being the first to have their anchor standing throughout the bulletin, rather than presenting from behind a desk.
- Five News has also trialled Your News, a segment allowing viewers to record their own news stories for broadcast during Five News programmes.
