[edit] Portal Management

To anyone who comes across this portal: please feel free to help out! These are my suggestions for rotations and whatnot:

  • News should be updated continuously, but not all "paddock rumors" or driver comments need be noted; only significant things such as driver changes, a blurb on the result of each race, etc. Each item should have an external source, and the link to the subject of the item should be in bold.
  • Rotate the Featured Article and Featured Picture once a week, but maybe at different times of the week - one on Saturdays and the other on Wednesdays, perhaps. Selections should be decided here beforehand; only freely-licensed pictures should be eligible for featuring.
  • The preview for the next race should be changed immediately after a race finishes, and may be updated until the event with relevant news, comments, etc.
  • Standings should (obviously) be updated immediately after every race.
  • Are there enough new F1 articles and interesting F1 facts to justify a "Did you know" box?

Comments? — Dan|Talk 15:13, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

There're plenty enough 'Did you know?' facts to keep turning those over. Although some of the 'facts' on the F1 pages need checking before they are used! See below for a suggestion on storing them somewhere so this can be done easily. How is this done for the Wikipedia front page?

Good articles might be in shorter supply - but as a starter, how about replacing the McLaren item with the Renault article, which seems to be in quite a good state? 4u1e 8 March 06

[edit] Did you know?

'Did you knows' are circulated from the list at Portal:Formula One/Did you know (management) every Wednesday. If this has not been done, please feel free to take one from that list and substitute it for the top one from the list here.

If you have an F1 'Did you know' then please add it to the list here. All contributions are gratefully received!

[edit] Suggestions for selected Article:

Proposals for Selected article can now be made at Portal_talk:Formula_One/Management of selected articles, where those proposals from the discussions below that have not yet been used have been added. Selected articles should be of Good Article standard or above. Where articles are not yet of GA atandard it is proposed that an improvement drive be used to get them to the required standard. See here for details. 4u1e 14:23, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

The current article proposed for improvement to GA standard and as the next Selected Article is Gilles Villeneuve - work should be completed by July 16. See the article talk page for details of the work required. 4u1e 14:36, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Formula One Editing

It is becoming aparent that many of the articles on Formula One are starting to be updated at a high rate due to users adding speculation and unconfirmed news. Suggest putting all news and speculation in the news section of Portal:Formula One only. Articles such as 2008 Formula One season should not really be used for speculation. The info here should only be confirmed info. Portal:Formula One can be used for day to day news and the other articles on Formula One should be kept for reference info only, not news. Anyone agree? How about Giancarlo Fisichella for the next one? Topical and in fair condition. 4u1e 06:54, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Done 4u1e 17:43, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Just happened across the Mark Webber article, which looks very good. Suggest that this should be the next featured article. 4u1e 01:13, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Done. 4u1e 16:34, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

So - what should the next Featured Article on the F1 portal be? Don't think we've got enough good articles to do this weekly, so perhaps monthly would be better for now. Who has a proposal for the next one (say for mid June?) 4u1e 00:13, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm... obviously all articles wouldn't be worthy of this, but why not (during the season at least) make the featured article (assuming there can be more than one) the circuit of the weekend, a driver that may be from that circuit's locality, and his manufacturer? We'd have to avoid repeats, and drivers like Narain Karthekeyan (yes, he's out of a primary spot but it's the only one I could think of) would have to be presented at GPs that have no locals, like China. And if we're in an off week, we could do things like news (not how sure that'd work) or technology or controversial items (like Traction Control). Eh, they're just suggestions... Vegasrebel29 03:30, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

I like Vegasrebel29's suggestion, but would also add notable previous races at a track also be included in the pool. F1 has a 50+ year history and some epic battles. And that history also includes constructors and drivers that are no longer around, but are definitely worth a look. Perhaps Team Lotus would be a good start. Scottanon 03:43, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
Featuring articles of past circuits, drivers and constructors would be ideal in my mind, as it would push F1's roots to the people, and they could learn where the sport has come from. This would all be down to the quality of articles covering the historical areas of F1. I will have a browse and see if I can find any articles that are up to scratch. Raider2044 BioTalkContribs 04:03, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
If you're looking for former drivers, how about Masten Gregory? Not very well known but by all accounts very talented racer (got a podium on debut!)... I expanded this article a while ago, it could probably do with a cleanup but I think the basis is there. Also a few WDC articles could be fixed up to "selected article" status – Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost... AlbinoMonkey (Talk) 04:45, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
The "next event" section features the details on the next track. There is nothing to stop editors adding a summary of the event. This would leave the selected article box free for historic tracks etc. Mark83 11:26, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

How about Damon Hill? I mean the last Englishman to win the F1 Championship must have some credit? Also the fact that all we need to do is just find sources for the article a nd an expansion here and there --Skully Collins 06:21, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

I agree-Damon Hill is a suitable article, however, I think it needs cleaning up first. Flymeoutofhere 07:00, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Today, I would vote for Fernando Alonso because he is a world championship winner, one of todays best drivers and someone who is leaiding this years season. Also his article does not need any work doing to it.Flymeoutofhere 07:00, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Been done already. Mark83 11:26, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

On the note of featured drivers; does anyone think that it would be a good idea to feature every driver (from that season) during the season, and then 'legend' drivers in the months between seasons? Flymeoutofhere 07:00, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Since this weekend is also the Indy 500 weekend I would perhaps consider either Jacques Villeneuve or even better Juan Pablo Montoya. Now isnt the time but if anyone gets time to improve the Super Aguri article then I think that would be an excellent candidate. Jsydave 08:15, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Why don't you put Graham Hill up, because he won both the Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix. Cs-wolves 09:12, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

How about Juan-Manuel Fangio, Gilles Villeneuve or Ayrton Senna? I think, that they were the best... SpeedKing1980 09:37, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

The Gilles Villeneuve article is a pretty good one - how about it for featured article? Bretonbanquet 21:34, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
Sounds like a strong candidate for featured article status. --Siva1979Talk to me 20:35, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

  • NB: Objections have been raised to calling such parts of Portals "Featured articles". The title used is "selected article" as the vast majority haven't been vetted to meet featured article status.
Fair point - terminology issue on my part, I think! user:4u1e

OK - D Hill is ahead on votes to date, but needs some work before it is used. I've put some suggestions on talk:Damon Hill, feel free to tick them off! 4u1e 31 May 2006 (around lunchtime)

Made some progress on this - but the article needs some proper references. Please help if you can :) 4u1e 21:05, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Skully Collins and some others have done a lot of work to add references, so I've put Damon Hill in as the selected article from today (just in time for the British Grand Prix!). Thanks to all those who contributed. I can see I need to do some thinking about how better to manage this selected article thing, but I think we've got a good first result. 4u1e 21:54, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Team Lotus

Team Lotus was proposed by Scottanon above.

On further review of the entry I withdraw the nomination. Needs to much work as it stands. Maybe I'll take a crack at it when all my home improvement stuff is done. Scottanon 20:52, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Just my view, but it certainly needs references, and I think the structure needs tidying up. Not sure about the list of quotes, either. 4u1e
  • As Damon Hill has now been put on the F1 portal as the selected article, Gilles Villeneuve is next up. I've listed some stuff that probably needs doing at talk:Gilles Villeneuve. 4u1e 22:01, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] So, how's this going to work then?

SEE HERE FOR CURRENT PAGE FOR MANAGING THIS WORK - PLEASE DO NOT COMMENT FURTHER BELOW 4u1e 14:39, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Whoah - that's a lot of comments!

I think a lot of good ideas have been raised above, but I also think that we might struggle to implement all of them!

I suggest that for now, we see if we can cycle an article through every week. Based on suggestions from several people above, how about this:

  • In the week running up to a GP we have a contemporary article relevant to that GP (article on the track, relevant current driver, or currently in the news team).
  • In 'off' weeks, we have a historical, technical or some other type article, ideally with a connection to current events, but not essentially so.

We don't need to get too tied up in this, but there's a lot of F1 articles out there, so some kind of structure is useful. If everyone's happy with that, then, since it's a bit late to pick a current one ahead of Monaco (I for one am away over the weekend anyway), the question would be to select, and if necessary, upgrade an article for next week - so this would be a 'historical, technical or some other' to be substituted in by end of Monday, say. Why not use the voting format proposed above?

I'll be interested to see whether we can keep up a weekly update - don't forget to watch this page, cos I'm not going to keep updating your talk pages. user:4u1e 13:38 26 May

This could be a very good way to promote a 'collaboration of the week/fortnight'-style project on WPF1, and at the end of the allotted time the improved article is featured on the portal? AlbinoMonkey (Talk) 13:16, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

We should create a new page for voting.--M Johnson (talkcontribs) 07:44, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Whoops - wasn't able to get to the box to actually access this page over the weekend at all (bank holiday in the UK as well). M Johnson has a good point, I'll set up a separate voting page when I get a minute (if anyone else wants to do it in the meantime, feel free!) Fair support for D Hill above, but doesn't have any refs yet! Anyone got some? 4u1e

OK. I don't think doing a weekly update is realistic at present - not enough of the articles have references, so lets stick with the monthly at present. I'll come back and arrange a new page for voting, but the two articles with most support at present are Damon Hill and Gilles Villeneuve, both are good, both need references. I can't help with D Hill, but I can probably do something on Villeneuve from the Gerald Donaldson biography. Let's work towards getting one or the other of those done for mid June. 4u1e 07:14, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Yeh weekly is too often probably, but I think the best way is to do something like the Football Article Improvement Drive, and at the end of each period (fortnight, month, etc) the article that was improved is used as the 'selected article'. In addition to helping us have more good-quality F1 articles, the fact it's selected will hopefully see more people helping with the improvement drive. Just a thought. (Meanwhile, Fittipaldi (constructor) is excellent work IMO!) AlbinoMonkey (Talk) 03:38, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I think you're right. That's effectively what's happened with the D Hill article, but I think I need to focus a bit more on making the process work and not getting sucked into the work on the piece itself. I will get round to setting all this out in a neat process at some point! (In the meantime, if anyone wants to work on Gilles Villeneuve it's just sitting there waiting! 4u1e 20 June

[edit] National Flags of Drivers

Take a look at the little flag thingies besides the driver names at, say, the 1973 United States Grand Prix. Look at Jody Scheckter. Shouldn't that be the flag of apartheid-era South Africa? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JCCyC (talkcontribs).

Yes, it should be the flag that would have been flown at the time, had he finished on the poidium. -slowpokeiv 02:41, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
It seems flags are only consistently used from about 1979 onwards. Before that, a few races have the flags (and those are the ones that have South Africa wrong) but most don't. I've fixed the one I mentioned and a few others. JCCyC 17:45, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
DAMN, that flag is all over the place. Not only is there the occasional South African pay driver, but there's the result boxes when Scheckter achieved podium or pole position... argh.
OK, I believe I got them all. JCCyC 21:03, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
