While you generally do have more leeway on talk pages, that leeway isn't absolute; see talk page guidelines, among other key policies. With that in mind, I feel you should have been blocked. The page lists the populations as they were in 2001, not "what they would have been in 2001 if municipal boundaries were other than they were and as they were later changed to be." In 2001, the City of Montreal's population is what is listed. The City has changed since then and is now geographically bigger. We all get that.
