Mad Max 4: Fury Road was originally intended be the fourth of the Mad Max franchise of science fiction action movies. While the status of the "Fury Road" film is uncertain, some anecdotal sources suggest that the film may be in pre-production.
[edit] History
Although the project was given the green light for a $100 million USD budget, Fury Road has been in hiatus due to security concerns related to trying to film in Africa, because the United States and many other countries have tightened travel and shipping restrictions. Fan chat pages on the Internet have speculated about several possible plots. Ideas range from taking place after Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome to a prequel, telling the story of the Main Force Patrol which existed prior to the original film, Mad Max.
Mel Gibson said that he does not wish to work on a "Mad Max" film, not because he doesn't like the series, but because he doesn't consider himself physically able to play Max anymore. He even joked, saying that the movie would be called "Fat Max". In a recent interview with IGN, Mel Gibson seemed more open to the idea of doing a Mad Max film, when being asked if there was any film series he'd like to revisit for a sequel or follow-up, he stated[1]
“ | Well, I always felt those Road Warrior movies were pretty cool, like they were in-the-gutter comic book stuff. It was like really pretty exciting stuff. I don't know. We began to mount one; it was a terrific idea that George Miller had and, boy, it was prohibitively expensive. But maybe there will be a time and place where that won't be the case. I don't know. | ” |
However, as recently as November 2006, George Miller stated that he still has full intentions to make another Mad Max film, telling the press that he’s considering doing the film without Gibson, saying, “There's a real hope. The last thing I wanted to do is another Mad Max, but this script came along, and I'm completely carried away with it."[2] [3]
While speculation of the film's tentative pre-production remain uncorroborated industry and internet hearsay, in December of 2006, an article on movies.com [4] added speculation to the potential casting of actor Paul Walker as a replacement for Gibson in the titular role of Max. The article cites praise given to Walker by George Miller, who views Walker "as the real deal" when it comes to action movies, and a possible contender for the role.
Channel 10 news in Australia, has stated that George Miller is definitely making another Mad Max film, he has stated he wants a hollywood unknown to take the role of Max Rockatansky, it is still unknown if the movie will be a prequel or a continuation of the original series, there has been some rumours of a reboot. Miller again confirmed his desire to make another Mad Max at the 2007 Aurora film maker initiative, however he did say he thought Mel Gibson would not be interested in the film because he was too old.[1]
