Rage Against the Machine est le premier album de Rage Against the Machine, qui mélange pour la première fois des styles comme le hip-hop et le rock. Le groupe est impliqué politiquement : les paroles dénonce les injustices commises par le gouvernement Américain, parle de différentes organisation politiques ...
C'est l'album précurseur d'un style qui explosera à la fin des années 90 sous l'impulsion de groupes comme Limp Bizkit, Korn ou Linkin Park, bien qu'ils soient plus orientés pop.
La pochette du CD est une photo de Thích Quảng Đức, un moine Bouddhiste Vietnammien, en train de q'immoler dans la ville de Saigon en 1963. Il protestait contre l'oppression des Bouddhistes menée par l'administration du premier ministre Ngô Đình Diệm.
La chanson "Killing in the Name" est présente dans la bande-sonore de Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas et de Guitar Hero II quand à la chanson "Wake Up" elle apparait sur la BO du film Matrix.
L'album occupa la première place du top 200 du Billboard, et reste 45e dans le top 200 du magazine et en 2001 le Q Magazine nomme "Rage Against the Machine" premier des 50 meilleurs albums de tout les temps.
