Le Rock indépendant (indie rock en anglais) est une classification apparue avec l'apparition du punk rock à la fin des années 1970. Cette dénomination vient de l'indépendance revendiquée des labels vis à vis des majors du disque.
Cette classification n'est donc pas purement musicale mais désigne à l'origine des disques (au lieu de groupes) publiés par de "petits" labels. Nombre de groupes sont ainsi qualifiés (étymologiquement à tort) de "rock indé" alors qu'ils publient leurs albums chez les majors. Par extension cependant la catégorie "indé" est aujourd'hui plus utilisée pour un genre de musique rock que pour le statut contractuel des groupes.
Le rock indépendant peut contenir de nombreuses sous classifications :
