Go U Northwestern
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "Go U Northwestern" is the primary fight song for Northwestern University. It was written in 1912 by Theodore Van Etten, a member of the Northwestern University Wildcat Marching Band at the time. It debuted November 23, 1912, at old Northwestern Field in Northwestern's football season-finale versus the Illinois Fighting Illini.
The song, along with the "Push On Song" and the university's alma mater "Quæcumque Sunt Vera" are Northwestern official school songs. "Go U Northwestern" is played by the marching band during football games every time Northwestern scores against its opponent and at various other times during the game.
[edit] Lyrics
The song consists of a chorus, followed by a call-and-response instrumental interlude puctuated by a few lines of yelling, and the chorus repeated:
- Go U Northwestern!
- Break right through that line.
- With our colors flying,
- We will cheer you all the time,
- U Rah! Rah!
- Go! U Northwestern!
- Fight for victory,
- Spread far the fame of our fair name,
- Go! Northwestern win that game.
- (Call and response instrumental)
- (Yell) Go! Northwestern Go!
- (Call and response instrumental)
- (Yell) Go! Northwestern Go!
- Hit 'em hard!
- Hit 'em low!
- Go! Northwestern Go!
(Repeat chorus)
