Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics is the edition released by Saban of Gurimu Meisaku Gekijou (グリム名作劇場 Grimm Masterpiece Theatre?) an anime series produced by Nippon Animation. It was originally broadcast in Japan from 21 October 1987 to 30 March 1988. The cartoon was localized for a Western audience by Saban Entertainment and broadcast in the United States on the Nickelodeon TV channel from 1989 to 1995.
The second season of the series - titled Shin Gurimu Meisaku Gekijou (新グリム名作劇場 New Grimm Masterpiece Theatre?) in Japan - aired between 2 October 1988 and 26 March 1989. It was also localized under the series' English name.
Nippon Animation sometimes refers to the series as "Grimm's Fairy Tales" and "Grimm's Fairy Tales II".[1]

Each episode of the series is a retelling a folk or fairy tale culled from a variety of sources (despite the fact that the cartoon's title implies that only tales collected by the Brothers Grimm were used). Sometimes one story was serialized over several episodes in the original Japanese version; in the English release, for stories contained in multiple episodes, Saban condensed and edited all the episodes together into a feature which lasted an hour or longer (for example, The Frog Prince and Snow White).

[edit] Opening credits
The opening credits begin with the title card and introduction to the theme song. Then viewer then follows the flight of a young, hooded girl through a fantasy land. (The girl is the mascot for the series, and is an illumination in the full Japanese opening.) She frolics on the borders of a dark forest, visits a gnome and animal village, and flies high above sunlit pastures before making her way toward a magnificent fairy tale castle. Interspered throughout her journey are scenes from episodes of the cartoon, such as the Bremen musicians skipping along a dusty road and Cinderella's carriage. However, some scenes from the original Japanese opening animation (in addition to the "illumination" of the girl at the beginning) were cut from the English version, including a scene of demons dancing around a fire in a dark cavern.

The ending credits of the English version included a still shot of the fairy tale castle from the opening with a shortened version of the opening theme song, featuring whistling to the song's melody instead of sung lyrics.
The original Japanese opening and ending themes to the series were sung by Shiori Matsumoto.

For the region of Portugal and Spain all episodes were released in DVD except the last one, the DVDs were released under the name of "Tus Cuentos Clasicos" (Classic Tales) by the editorial "Coleccion RBA" in their respective regional languages, those DVDs contain the episodes produced directly by Nippon Animation.
