I've expanded the stub on Paras of Nepal. It needed to be. I've also dropped enough hints and clues and links to other articles to point the finger of guilt where it truly belongs. Most Nepalis know the truth, now most non-Nepalis will be able to "connect the dots" and figure it out for themselves. Whether or not King Gy had any direct involvement, however, is highly speculative. But he clearly benefitted from his son's foul deeds. His regime is now more of a military dictatorship than a monarchy. Not that the Maoist insurgents are much better, it seems. Nepalis deserve better. Whenever fear prevents the truth being spoken about power, tyranny, corruption and injustice prevail. CROWN PRINCE PARAS IS NEPAL'S CALIGULA!--R.D.H. [edit] Early Life

The text says the infant Gyanendra was declared king for two months (1950–1951). However, if he was born in July 1947, he would have been 3 1/2 years old. Isn't that a little old to be considered an infant? In comman usage, isn't an infant typically less than one year old? 19 May 2006

[edit] Two Gyanendras?

Why does it say at the bottom of the article that he was king in 2001 and in the 1950s? That obviously can't right. Maybe there was another King Gyanendra in the 50s, I don't know. Can someone fix this please?

He was crowned as a child in the 1950s when his grandfather fled to India.--Grammatical error 15:54, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Honours

It would be very hepful if someone could let me know whether the present King or his successors ever receievd decorations from the UK Sovereign. Thanks.

Gyanendra was invested as a Knight Grand Cross of the British Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1986. AFAIK Gyanendra has not had any successors yet. :-) Mapple 14:34, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

People like him can never be decorated.

[edit] Star

Can anyone refer me to any information regarding the six-pointed star above the King's head in the shot from the TV announcment?

-- The six sided star is an ancient symbol, in this case called a Satkon (let's remember the "star of David" is an incredibly recent design): http://www.welcomenepal.com/new/aboutnepal_religion_symbols.asp

-correction. the Jewish Star of David (or Magen David) is not a recently designed symbol but an ancient Hebraic symbol going back thousands of years. It can be found in the ruins of ancient synogogues in Israel and throughout the Mediteranean region.

01:38, 22 April 2006 (UTC) <-- Incorrect...

See Magen David. Excerpt: "The 'Star of David' (Hebrew: מָגֵן דָּוִד‎ [pronounded maw-gān daw-vēd], transliteration: 'Magen David', Ashkenazi Hebrew transliteration: 'Mogen David'-- literally: 'Shield of David', Arabic: نجمة داوود‎, transliteration: Najmat Dawuud), also known as the 'Seal of Solomon' or 'Symbol of Solomon' (Arabic: خاتم سليمان, Khatam Sulayman), is a generally recognized symbol of Judaism and Jewish identity and is also known colloquially as the 'Jewish Star'. The symbol's use as a sign of Jewish identity is of recent date; in ancient Judaism the Star of David cannot be found, instead ancient Judaism used the Menorah as its distinctive symbol. It has been used also in Islam, in the Eastern Religions as well as in Occultism."

And: "The Star of David - Unlike the menora (candelabrum), the Lion of Judah, the shofar (ram's horn) and the lulav (palm frond), the Star of David was never a uniquely Jewish symbol. The standard name for the geometric shape is a hexagram or six-pointed star, composed of two interlocking equilateral triangles." http://www.israel-mfa.gov.il/mfa/history/modern%20history/israel%20at%2050/the%20flag%20and%20the%20emblem

And: http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/star.html "The Magen David (shield of David, or as it is more commonly known, the Star of David) is the symbol most commonly associated with Judaism today, but it is actually a relatively new Jewish symbol. It is supposed to represent the shape of King David's shield (or perhaps the emblem on it), but there is really no support for that claim in any early rabbinic literature. In fact, the symbol is so rare in early Jewish literature and artwork that art dealers suspect forgery if they find the symbol in early works."

And: http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/il.html "The Magen David (Shield of David), the six-pointed star made of two triangles, appeared according to Jewish tradition on the shield of King David. According to the same tradition the same symbols appeared also on King Solomon's ring and therefore it is also called the Seal of Solomon. This symbol was considered to have magical powers and as a defence from the evil spirits. Such symbol without any connection to Judaism was found in India. The symbol was also considered as magical by the Moslems (as Solomon Seal) and appeared as the symbol of Nigeria. It was also used by the Ethiopian monarchs who, according to their tradition, were the descendants of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheva, and was also known there as Solomon Seal."

Please do some basic research.

-It is a shame that the politics of the Israel/Palestine conflict must rear its head everywhere you turn. One of the prevailing ideas of some anti-Israel people is that the Magen-David (Shield of David) is a recent Jewish symbol and cannot be found amoung ancient Jewish texts, paintings, buildings, etc. All one needs to do is visit Israel to see the Star of David amoung the many symbols throughout Jewish archeological sites. The Star is David is a Jewish symbol and always has been a Jewish symbol. That doesn't mean other cultures have not used the same symbol but it is nonetheless still a prominent Jewish symbol.

<--- You know nothing about me or my politics or my incentive to answer with the above excerpts. You simply presume too much. That's the 'Net for ya. These are basic, inevitable discovered shapes, (same for the swastika-like, cross-like or n-pointed star designs), that many cultures all the world over have spontaneously and independantly arrived at through a visual design evolution. I used credible sites to refute your claim (www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org, and even the Israeli MFA - hardly neo-nazi or pro-Hezbollah sites!). You want it to be unique but instead it is merely one of many similar designs only "relatively" recently adopted for Judaism-specific uses. Becareful lest you fall into the trap of idolatry over a geometric symbol.

[edit] Incarnation?

Please fix the paragraphs above this sentence: "Given these circumstances, people have lost most of the faith they had in the monarch as an incarnation of the god."

...it never mentioned anything about him being an incarnation of any god. So it'd be nice to elaborate on that. (I know, it's Vishnu, but from the article no one can know that.)

[edit] Pronunciation?

The BBC switched from pronouncing him [dʒa'nɛndrə] to ['gi:aˌnɛndrə] a few months ago, VOA says "g(y)ah-NEHN-dreh". So which is it? If you know, please add the IPA to the article.--84.188.147.149 11:33, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

BBC reporters frequently butcher names, e.g. "Kim Yong-il". I'm inclined to believe VOA, which goes by the individual's own pronunciation where available. Gazpacho 19:34, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Its probably ['gi:aˌnɛndrə] . The trouble is that the first character in his name is the only letter in nepali that isn't exactly the same as the equivalent hindi/sanskrit character. The BBC probably got confused because this character looks a lot like the [dʒ] character in sanskrit/hindi/nepalese.

It's [gyanendrV] (X-SAMPA) (primary stress on second syllable, secondary on first, I think), in Nepali. [gy{nEndr\@] is probably the pronunciation which would be most found in English. 82.10.98.240 22:13, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
[y] (front closed rounded vowel) doesn't exist in English...--Sonjaaa 16:57, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Crown Prince?

Gyanendra (as heir-presumptive) during King Dipendra's 3-day reign, didn't have the title Crown Prince. The title CP is reserved for an heir-apparent (the King's son), as King Dipendra had no sons, there was no crown prince. GoodDay 22:18, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Date of Birth

Princess Prerana Rajya Laxmi Devi (Born February 29, 1978) - No she wasn't. That year WAS NOT a leap year. Anyone know the correct DoB? Arcturus 20:03, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

According to Almanach de Bruxelles (and a bunch of webpages about the royal family of Nepal) the princess was born February 29, 1978. Since that date obviously is incorrect, the correct date must be March 1, 1978.

[edit] Curps

I've done nothing but improve this article. Curps, either take the time to look at my edits (personal attack removed). Susej dahij 21:33, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
