[edit] History
H.D. Stafford Secondary School was originally opened as a Junior Secondary School, but with an expanding population was transformed into a full-fledged Secondary School.
[edit] Drama
The school is well-known, locally, for its drama program, and, in particular, its musical productions. Possibly, the school's best known production has been CHICAGO, directed in 2004-05 by Ron Williams. In 2005-06, a production of Disney's musical, Beauty and the Beast was performed, and currently, in 2006-07, a rendition of Fame is being prepared. As of the 2006-07 school year, a new out-of-timetable class dealing exclusively with the musical, known as Theatre Company, has been available. This has allowed students to be rewarded with graduation credits for their work on the musical.
[edit] GSA
HD Stafford’s GSA (gay-straight alliance) is up and running. Currently the GSA is planning a school survey and alternatively a few up and coming contests and student info sessions in the months to come. There are some students that are members of Stafford's GSA that feel it is made up of fail. The group has yet to educate any of the school's population on homosexual rights or to make the school a safer place for those with alternate sexualities. The leader of the group has gone against the group's principles by exposing the sexuality of a couple of members within the group. It is in debate whether the group will be continued next year or not due to low productivity.
[edit] Future
The continued operation of HD Stafford as a secondary school is currently in debate. Plans have been proposed in which 4 schools within Langley School District 35 be consolidated to operate as 3. Stafford would be the school chosen for closure because of its smaller size. The other three schools, Brookswood, Langley Secondary, and DW Poppy could more effectively absorb Stafford's population. Many students, faculty members and parents have been making an effort to keep Stafford open by attending school board meetings and creating petitions. It is currently unknown what the School Board's decision might be.
