Half the Sky Foundation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Half the Sky Foundation is an organization formed by individuals concerned with the treatment and care of Chinese orphans. The charity was created in 1997, when several adoptive parents and educators found that many state-run orphanages were ill equipped to nurture and educate infants and toddlers. With China’s growing population and the increasing need to address this issue, the organization created programs aimed at providing individualized care for orphaned children.
The foundation also addresses the issue of orphaned Chinese girls. Due to China’s One Child Policy the abandoning of infant girls has increased in the past 20 years. This increase has led to a significant number of orphaned girls in China. The Half the Sky Foundation focuses on caring for the abandoned girls and even has programs designed to educate those too old for adoption. In addition to these programs, the Half the Sky Foundation encourages people to adopt children from China. The organization essentially devotes itself to improving the lives of children who are neglected by society.
