How do I get the special character box on my Media Wiki, or better yet, is there a help page on it? I've been looking for a while, and I can't find a help page on the special character box. My last resort was to copy the html... but I don't even know where the js function is. Could someone help me? By the way, I'm using media wiki 1.8.2. Hangfromthefloor 09:25, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

...never mind, I found MediaWiki:Edittools, but I still don't know how to use it. Also, can anyone give me suggestions for how to automatically change apostrophes and quotation marks in to smart ones? i.e. ' → ’ Hangfromthefloor 12:00, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Hello. You should also have MediaWiki:Edittools on you're own project - just paste the source from MediaWiki:Edittools on Wikipedia, and it should work. Some of the stuff in Wikipedia's one comes from mw:Extension:CharInsert, you will need to install that to use <charinsert> tags. If nothing happens when you MediaWiki:Edittools, then check you're using the most recent MediaWiki software. With luck, that should fix it. If not, try the MediaWiki website, it might be some help.

I'm not too sure about how to automagically change the quotes to smart quotes. As I see it, there's two ways to do this:

Easy option: You could create a template, so {{Q|Text}} would become “Text” (make Template:Q have text “{{{1}}}”). It's not an ideal solution, but it is easy! See Category:Quotation templates for other versions on that idea.
Hard option: You could find or implement an extension to MediaWiki using $wgHooks. You'd need to use $wgHooks['ArticleSave'][] = 'fnMyHook';, and write a function fnMyHook in PHP which is similar to mw:Extension:Boilerplate.

I've got the quote template going. But I still don't understand how to install the <charinsert> stuff, as well as the js that it uses (insertTags). Is that included? Also, I was planning on useing a box more like the one on wiktionary, with the select option box. wikt:MediaWiki:Edittools {helpme}

{helpme} is really just for help with editing the English Wikipedia, not setting up a MediaWiki installation. http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Communication has some avenues of help to do with that.--Commander Keane 01:56, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

In case you didn't see my response before the Talk:ZaDa Rider page was speedily deleted; no, it is not appropriate to redirect a Wikipedia article to a page in your user space. Hey it's Atom from Zada rider, good job trying to get the article up. I'd try again if I was you.

I'm not going to bother trying, since they're on my back. Once idog releases the game we have a reason for a Wikipedia article. Although I do want it, [and I even asked to redirect ZaDa Rider → my subpage User:Hangfromthefloor/ZaDa Rider the admins are just going to delete it again, and probably block me. 1. When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you.

2. Please remember to mark your edits as minor when (and only when) they genuinely are minor edits (see Wikipedia:Minor edit). Marking a major change as a minor one (and vice versa) is considered poor etiquette. The rule of thumb is that only an edit that consists solely of spelling corrections, formatting and minor rearranging of text should be flagged as a 'minor edit'.
