Hemis Monastery

Located in the Ladakh region of India in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Hemis Monastery is one of the most popular Buddhist monasteries near the Ladakhi capital city of Leh.
Situated 45 kms from Leh, also known as Chang-Chub-Sam-Ling (lone place of compassionate person), the Gompa (ladakhi for monastery) houses a large library. Padmasambhava, the annual Hemis festival, is held in early June.
Tibetan Buddhism has historically influenced local religious practice throughout Ladakh. Hemis is a monastery of the Red Hat Sect, and was established in 1672 AD by the Ladakhi king Senge Nampar Gyalva.
