[edit] WP:Films Welcome

Welcome!

Hey, welcome to the Films WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of films and film characters. If you haven't already, please add {{User WikiProject Films}} to your user page.

A few features that you might find helpful:

  • Most of our important discussions about the project itself and its related articles take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.

There is a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Want to jump right into editing? The style guidelines show things you should include.
  • Want to assist in some current backlogs within the project? Visit the Film Tasks template to see how you can help.
  • Want to know how good our articles are? Our assessment department has rated the quality of every film article in Wikipedia. Check it out!
  • Want to collaborate on articles? The Cinema Collaboration of the Week picks an article every week to work on together.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Nehrams2020 01:25, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Images in infoboxes

Hi! Adding infoboxes doesn't necessarily mean adding images in them, but it would help if you make sure the {{filmimage}} request tag is entered in the talk page of all films with no image. Eventually we'll organize another campaign for adding requested images. But if you feel like adding images anyway, here is the proper procedure: First find an image of a movie poster, or DVD cover, or VHS cover from a website that doesn't request any permission for its images. Good examples are the AMG, amazon and the such. A bad example is if you go to IMDb and under posters (where they have a copy-protect and a prohibition warning), you attempt to screen-copy posters belonging to Nostalgia Factory, like here [1]. Once you have the image saved, the uploading is quite straight: Press Upload file on the left panel, browse to find the image in your computer, make sure the title you upload it under doesn't already exist in Wikipedia, and in the Summary box type the text: Movie poster (or DVD cover, or VHS cover), for use in the film article only (Copy the full name name of the film article here). Source: (Copy the full URL of the page you copied the image from here). Then (most important, or the image will get tagged for deletion) in the licencing drop-down box choose either Movie poster, or DVD cover, or Video tape cover, and press Upload. If you get a message that an image exists under this name, you can step back, change the "Destination filename" in the upload page and re-upload. once you do it a couple of times you'll see it's not as much as it sounds. Cheers and thanks for helping up with the infoboxes. Hoverfish Talk 15:37, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Oh I forgot: the image should be low resolution (meaning about 200px width). If you have a bigger poster from somewhere (say, 400px width) , please use your image editor to reduce its size first. Hoverfish Talk 15:44, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Oops! Some more remarks: Please, don't give but 2-3 (max 4) starring actors in the infobox. All names should be separated with a break . Where it sais imdb you only need to enter the number, not the whole link, it links automatically. And where it sais caption, we just write "Movie poster of the film" or DVD cover etc. It's not a place for taglines, although if no one else objects, I just left them as you entered them. Also the infobox goes to the top, followed -without empty lines- by the intro text. You can look at the corrections I did to your 3 infoboxes, hoping this will help you get the spirit of our infoboxing conventions. Cheers! Hoverfish Talk 15:51, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

No problem, I'm sure you'll find soon all about our complicated conventions. The trick I use to find top starring cast is I look it up in amg, where they give it up-top in bold text. Hoverfish Talk 17:45, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

I can't guarantee an adoption, due to the massive amount of threads I follow and tasks I have undertaken, but I will keep a watch on your film edits for a short while and let you know if I see something worth mentioning. I just don't want you to get the feeling I am bugging you with my corrections and remarks. Ok? Hoverfish Talk 18:16, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

One detail I noticed is that the content of talk pages stays unchanged unless archived. It's somewhat of a taboo in Wikipedia to remove or move statements from talk pages, so long as they are somewhat relevatnt to the topic. The warning about removing offensive content from biographies goes only for the main article page. The only cases where content is removed from talk pages is blatant vandalism (like "You are all idiots", or worse) or someone entering advertisement material, links to irrelevant blogs, etc. Hoverfish Talk 09:44, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] About your user pages

When it comes to your own user and talk page you can do as you like. It's only practical to keep usefull discussions so that others can know what was said on an issue. If you think there is something usefull you deleted that you really want to keep, you go to "history", press on the date of the version that would include the matterial you want to bring back, edit that version, copy (Ctrl+C) all you need from the contents of the edit box, and then (without saving) press "current version", edit it and paste (Ctrl+V) all you have up on top, or wherever you like. Again, you are entitled to do as you like here. It's your page. Hoverfish Talk 20:31, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Infobox questions

Thanks again for helping to add film infoboxes, we are finally starting to move down again in requests. For your first question, what exactly do you mean that the layout doesn't work? Does it have something to do with including information? If you want, you can start articles for the previous articles if you think that they are notable, and preferably, you have enough information to at least start a basic stub. If you decide to start them, please follow the various WP:Films guidelines and name them properly. If you don't want to start them, you can include them in Wikipedia:WikiProject Films/List of films without article. For the Jesus of Nazareth search, it is more common for people to type that in the search bar looking for the Jesus article rather than the film. However, on the Jesus page is a link to a disambiguation page at Jesus (disambiguation). This shows all of the articles that talk about Jesus, including several films (you may find one of the films you were talking about there), songs, and other people with the same name. Let me know if this answered your questions or if you want more clarification. --Nehrams2020 19:53, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

I don't see the gap you are talking about on the page (I'm using Firefox as my internet browser), but if you do, it may be caused by the references tag at the top of the article. Once it is removed then the infobox should format correctly. I'd recommend getting used to the ropes, which it looks like you are doing, before starting an article, but I don't think it should be to much of a problem for you. Keep up the good work and if you ever have any other questions in the future, I'll try to get back to you as soon as I can. --Nehrams2020 20:19, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

If I got the problem right, I did some fixing in the Jesus of Nazareth, hope it looks as you intended it. Such maintenance tags are better on the very top, next line the infobox, next line the beggining of the intro. Hoverfish Talk 22:37, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome. By the way, there are many Jesus films, but my two favorites are: The Gospel According to St. Matthew (film) and The Last Temptation of Christ (film). Hoverfish Talk 23:11, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image resize

What I would do is go to the original site and save it to a folder on your computer or desktop. Then right click on the image and open it in some sort of image editing software. I usually use Microsoft Office Picture Manager which lets you first crop the object, so for your image you could remove the extra white space on the sides. Then you can resize it (try to keep it to just a little bit above 200px). Also when uploading images, make sure that you add the appropriate license (for this one a DVD cover license), the source, a summary, and a fair use rationale. Look to some of my images here for examples. Then you upload a new image that is smaller and better cropped over the original (click the "Upload a new version of this file" link), then you can ask an administrator (such as User:Cbrown1023, our film administrator) to delete the original file. Let me know if that answers your question. If you don't have an image editing program such as Office Picture Manager, you can use IrfanView for a free download here. --Nehrams2020 23:46, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image tagging for Image:Dreams that money can buy.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Dreams that money can buy.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

O hello Mr Bot. I have put the info in now, tho i also did that on uploading. Not that you are reading this. High Heels on Wet Pavement 00:20, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I think that's the first time I've seen someone talk to a bot! I tried once before, never got a response back. Oh well... --Nehrams2020 00:24, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Ok, I corrected the entry manually. Before you press Upload, make sure you first write in the summary box all you like (it should include URL of where you copied it, and what it is) and the in the licencing box, drop the list down by pressing the button at the right, scroll down, select DVD or Video cover and when you see it in the box, then you press Upload. If you did it so and it didn't work I can't imagine why. If it fails again, you can edit the image page, write manually section ==Summary== and all you need in there and then section ==Licencing== where you only write {{DVDcover}}, or {{Video tape cover}}, or {{Movie poster}}, as the case may be. Hoverfish Talk 19:06, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

And do not web-link the URL address ([http:etc]), just http:etc —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hoverfish (talkcontribs) 19:11, 28 February 2007 (UTC).

Well, I checked the edit history. You had it right at the very beginning. But then you "deleted image... needs resizing", so what you did was you deleted the summary and the licencing. You can't alter the image once it is uploaded. At least not by editing its page directly. You can "re-upload" it or "edit it with an external application", but that's one step too complicated for now. The way to resize it, is that when you use it in the infobox, you add (say) 160px in the field "|image_size = ". Hoverfish Talk 19:24, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

And by the way, the infobox, by default, resizes any image to 200px, so needn'd worry about bigger images. Hoverfish Talk 19:27, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ministry of Truth (film)

Greetings! I saw that one while I was doing a bit of new page patrolling and tagged it because it was entitled (film)... didn't give it much thought. Now that you've brought it to my attention, a g-search reveals nothing about any such film having been made. I'm going to prod the article and watch it, but it probably should disappear! SkierRMH 00:42, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Update - the creator split this from another article, states that he never heard of it either! I've tagged it speedy as non-notable w/note regarding actual existence... good catch! SkierRMH 03:05, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
