History of Chinese art was the collaboration of the week for the week starting on November 21, 2004.

For details on improvements made to the article, see history of past collaborations.

The Polish and Spanish articles have a lot of material. Can someone translate or summarize? --MarkSweep 01:40, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] What is "art"?

I think we need to define the parameters of this article. What sorts of things are included as art? For example, should poetry be included as art? Or is that more in the realm of literature? What about songs? --Yu Ninjie 09:05, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Although I voted for this article in COTW, I was scratching my head on where to start since "art" really had a very large coverage. This was the article before being nominated to COTW, which was like a redirection page to different aspects of Chinese art. Now the page is like European art history and Japanese Art. That is not a bad idea, but eventually we will need to think of a structure to link articles on different aspects of Chinese Art. We may start discussion since this article will win COTW soon. -- Felix Wan 03:29, 2004 Nov 16 (UTC)

Traditionally, Chinese art primarily consists of music (Guqin), Go (board game) (called Weiqi in China), Calligraphy, and brush painting. Should this be mentioned somewhere in the text? --Liuyao 08:12, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)

It seems to me that this article is two broad and needs to be split in two. One about Chinese art (visual arts) and one about literary arts. Though I'm not sure then where film would fit in that kind of scheme.--Amerinese 06:03, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Martial Arts

Do martial arts belong in this article? — J3ff 20:44, 21 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Licensing requirements for photographs

Does anyone have experience getting an appropriate release from a museum to photograph exhibits (with natural light, of course)?

I'm not sure what the Wikipedia requirements are for releases, is there a document I can print out and ask a museum administrator to sign?

The reason I ask is that I live within driving distance of a great many Chinese art displays, and I have some decent photography equipment, but I don't want to waste my time taking a lot of photographs and then finding I can't contribute them.

Any advice will be appreciated. I want to contribute photographs to this article if at all possible.

[edit] Suggestions

The first sentence should be eliminated since it has little content: "Chinese art is art, whether modern or ancient, that originated in or is practiced in China or by Chinese artists or performers. "

"Cao Pi is known for writing the first Chinese poem using seven syllables per line (七言詩), the poem 燕歌行": a translation of the title is needed. --Erauch 03:32, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Move

We should move this article to "Art of China" - it is not the policy of Wikipedia to use adjectives derived from country/region names, it is potentially confusing. --[[User:OldakQuill|Oldak Quill]] 10:12, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)

What's potentially confusing about it? Stylistically I think "Chinese art" looks better: "Art of China" sounds clumsy. jguk 14:04, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)

  • That link is broken.

[edit] References

This article has been extensively expanded over the last week or so, yet I still see only one reference, surely more sources were used by the editors? Please cite your sources! -- [[User:Solitude|Solitude\talk]] 08:46, Nov 29, 2004 (UTC)

Most of the information I added was directly copying and pasting from other articles already within Wikipedia — J3ff 00:49, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] alter citizens sentence

this didn't make sense to me,

Citizens from Taiwan or Overseas Chinese can also be considered as full represent of Chinese art as long as they revendicate its heritage.

so I guessed at it's meaning and changed it to this..

The art of Taiwan and that of Chinese Emmigrants can also be considered part of Chinese art where it is based in or draws on the heritage of Chinese art.

does that sound reasonable? Mozzerati 21:16, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Withdrawal

Observing and searching MET site image, the vessel lost its cover. Therefore it lacks its shape. I withdraw acclaiming for it. Although I have a little doubt, it is impossible to describe it more, unless I really check it. december 6, 2005

[edit] Chinese printmaking - was there any before say 1800?

I'm looking for more to add to woodcut and woodblock printing, but i can't see anything here. Was there any significant tradition? Johnbod 01:45, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

There is a very rich tradition of "door guardian prints," "new year's prints" and other religious prints that goes back centuries-would you be interested? early printed art related books? how about printed money? or any book printing? what exactly are you looking for? hope that I can help now that WP knows that I am not any sock puppet! (I saw your comment to DGG that you were surprised, thanks! White Krane 11:00, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Just looking quickly at sites:

http://library.ust.hk/info/exhibit/newyear/ny-eng.html http://www.artelino.com/articles/chinese_new_year_prints.asp http://www.c-c-c.org/ex/doorgod.html

talks about Door Guardian prints evolving into New Year prints as early as the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). I think we are going to have to change the History section that deals with China under Woodcuts. Under "Woodblock printing" there are also far earlier examples of colour woodcuts than what is stated but they are printed money, does that count?White Krane 11:23, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Contemporary art since 1979

I have already made some slight additions to the section dealing with "Visual arts." But I think it needs a lot more work. Please comment or I will continue to make more changes in a week or two (is that the proper thing to do? I am new to this-just been on here for 4 days and do not want to upset anyone here!).White Krane 10:41, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
