Holten

Holten is a village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality of Rijssen-Holten, in a woody area, just south of the Holterberg. This about 65 m high hill is part of the National Park "Sallandse Heuvelrug". This National Park is the only area in the Netherlands, where the black grouse (in Dutch: het korhoen) can be found. This bird is protected, and therefore hunting it is strictly forbidden. In the breeding season, parts of the National Park are closed to the public.
Holten hosts a very large WWII-cemetery with mostly Canadian casualties of war. This cemetery is located about 3 km (2 miles) north-east of the railroad station, in the woods. It is only accessible on foot or bicycle. The beautiful location of Holten has caused important tourism in the village, which has a few very good hotels and camping sites.
Holten is located on the main rail line between Deventer and Almelo (like in Rijssen, the train stops once per hour there; in the rush-hours, twice per hour).
Holten was a separate municipality until 2001, when it merged with Rijssen.[1]
