[edit] The Self-Referencing I Ching : using the I Ching to describe itself
The following material is drawn from analysis of the binary sequence of the hexagrams where the hexagrams are derived from recursion of yin/yang and so showing a property of the method - the hexagrams are all linked together and contribute to the expression of, the description of, each hexagram.
- The skeletal form of hexagram 46 is described by analogy to the under-exaggerated properties of hexagram 26 where we have a generic focus on holding firm to 'traditional' perspectives (and so a sense of establishing a particular form of harmony/balance - in the binary sequence 26 pairs with hexagram 11). In hexagram 46 there is a sense of getting more entangled with some perspective.
The Lines:
Line 1-Ascension with confidence/consent. Free yourself of limits. you are in step with the universe.
Line 2-A small sincere offering. Although your contribution may be small, if you give all that you can, it will be enough.
Line 3-Ascension into an empty city. Obstacles dissolve one is free to progress.
Line 4-The king ascends/ makes an offering/ presents him to Mount Ch'i. This speaks of a time when perseverance has paid off and a lasting achievement has resulted
Line 5-Step by step. Do not become intoxicated by success. Proceed step by step with thought and contemplation in every move.
Line 6-Ascent into darkness. One must continually push upward. In many cases there is no guide. One must rely on inner strength and intuition when ascending into darkness.
