[edit] The Self-Referencing I Ching : using the I Ching to describe itself
The following material is drawn from analysis of the binary sequence of the hexagrams where the hexagrams are derived from recursion of yin/yang and so showing a property of the method - the hexagrams are all linked together and contribute to the expression of, the description of, each hexagram.
- The skeletal form of hexagram 49 is described by analogy to the under-exaggerated properties of hexagram 33 where we have a generic focus on enticement (competitive form), trickary, a 'structured' retreat (spring a trap, draw the enemy 'in'). In 49 there is a focus on revelation, showing what is 'behind' the mask, unmasking - and so the focus on revolution etc.
The lines:
Line 1-Wrapped in yellow cow's hide. Refrain and reconsider before taking any action.
Line 2-Revolution is appropriate when the time is right.
Line 3-When talk of change has come around three times. Starting a revolution too soon will be disastarous. Likewise waiting too long to correct injustice will cause problems. After listening to complaints and weighing options one must eventually act when he feels the time is right.
Line 4- Regrets disappear. It does a man no good to be applauded by the masses if he does not believe in his own actions.
Line 5- A great man changes like a tiger. Honesty and transparency lend credibility.
Line 6- The superior man changes like the leopard. the inferior man molts in the face. One should have realistic expectaions after revolution. If people are doing the best they can, that should good enough.
