The word Imamate has multiple meanings.
- Imamah (Shi'a doctrine) - A Shia Islamic term referring to the right of Ali and Imams directly descended from him to exclusively lead the Caliphate politically and spiritually.
- Imamate (Imamah) in Sunni theology generally refers to a Caliphate (Khilafah) politically lead by any Muslim chosen by majority consensus.
