[edit] History
In 1996 political science students from Leiden, The Netherlands visited colleagues in Rome, Italy. At this meeting the idea of an international association for students in political science was discussed. In 1998 the first General Assembly of what would come to be known as IAPSS was held in Leiden, The Netherlands and the association was incorporated under Dutch law in that year.
By the end of 1999 IAPSS had grown to encompass 20 member associations from 15 countries across Europe and Africa. By 2001 IAPSS had gained member associations from most European states as well as South Africa, Tanzania, Russia and Puerto Rico.
Today IAPSS has member associations from more than 40 countries worldwide and individual members from even more. Including individual members and the members of Association Members, IAPSS claims some 10,000 affiliated students on every continent.
[edit] IAPSS General Assembly
The IAPSS General Assembly is the main decision making body of the association. The General Assembly meets annually to decide on the future direction of IAPSS and to elect students to act as members of the various IAPSS committees.
The location and theme of the General Assembly conference varies each year. The cities that have hosted a General Assembly and the themes of the conferences so far are:
- 1998 Leiden (The Netherlands) 'The Foundation Conference'
- 1999 Oslo (Norway) 'European Security beyond 2000'
- 2000 Debrecen (Hungary) 'Nations and Minorities'
- 2001 Rome (Italy) 'Humankind and Globalisation'
- 2002 Bucharest (Romania) 'New Europe: The Quest for Identity and Legitimacy'
- 2003 Ljubljana (Slovenia) 'New Wind'
- 2004 Marburg (Germany) 'Good Knowledge: Education as an Object of Trade'
- 2005 Moscow (Russian Federation) 'The End of the Transition Paradigm'
- 2006 Amsterdam (The Netherlands) 'Global Crime'
The 2007 General Assembly will be hosted in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in May 2007 on the theme 'Globalising Citizenship'.
[edit] Elected Officials
IAPSS elects representatives to three committees and one editorial baord at the General Assembly each year. All previous committees and elected officials are archived at the IAPSS website. At the 2006 General Assembly in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and through the e-GA in january 2007 IAPSS elected the following members for the 2006/07 mandate:
[edit] Executive Committee
- Chairperson: Iana Stantieru
- Vice-Chairperson: Lina Pavletic
- Secretary General: Bojan Breznik
- Treasurer: Barbara Simonic
- Member: Iona-Alexandra Belascu
Note: The above configuration of the Executive Committee is as constituted following the 2007 e-GA. At the 2006 General Assembly the elected representatives no longer serving included Christine Cassar (Chairperson), Marina Ferfolja (Vice-Chairperson), Lidija Dravec (Treasurer) and Florin Marin (Secretary General). On 24 February 2007 ExCom Member George Appiah-Kumi resigned his position. Only two members of the ExCom elected in Amsterdam in 2006 remain on the Executive Committee following Appiah-Kumi's resignation.
[edit] Supervisory Committee
- Enzo Cervini - Argentina/Italy
- Giulia Giuliani - Italy
- Yvon Braam - The Netherlands
Note: The IAPSS Statute mandates that the members of the Supervisory Committee are citizens of three different states. In the previous mandate (2005/06) Enzo Cervini served on the Supervisory Committee as a national of Italy. In order to serve on the 2006/07 Supervisory Committee Cervini nominated as a national of Argentina so that he could be elected alongside Giulia Giuliani.
[edit] Disciplinary Committee
- Jonas Friedrich
- Raluca Teodor
- Alessio Sanguinetti
[edit] Politikon Editorial Board
- Anders Kusk
- Zoe Onutu
- Dylan Kissane
- Marco Magini
Note: The Editorial Board usually consists of four elected representatives. Tomas Mascarenhas was elected at the 2006 General Assembly but resigned his position on 31 January 2007. As allowed for under the IAPSS Statute, the ExCom appointed Marco Magini in his place.
[edit] 2006/07 Controversy
The 2006/07 ExCom as elected at the General Assembly in Amsterdam, The Netherlands suffered from a series of resignations between October and December 2006. Secretary General Florin Marin, Treasurer Lidija Dravec, Vice Chairperson Marina Ferfolja and Chairperson Christine Cassar resigned for a variety of reasons forcing IAPSS to conduct its first ever e-GA (Electronic General Assembly) on 14 January 2007. Following the e-GA the ExCom as listed above was endorsed with a mandate which will end in September 2007.
More troubles followed less than six weeks after the e-GA when ExCom Member George Appiah-Kumi resigned his position. While this act alone cannot force another e-GA (more than half the committee must resign for this to happen) it does leave only two of the seven officials democratically elected in Amsterdam in 2006 within the ExCom. As well, the ExCom now only has representatives of three countries. According to the IAPSS Statute, a further resignation by either Chairperson Iana Stantieru or Member Iona-Alexandra Belascu - representing Moldova and Romania, respectively - would require a new election.
[edit] Publications
IAPSS produces three regular publications.
The IAPSS Newsletter is an occasional communication to all members of IAPSS which includes news from the Executive Committee about IAPSS events, future plans of the Association and reports from IAPSS Officers around the world, including its representative to the Council of Europe. The IAPSS Newsletter is distributed via email to IAPSS members.
A Different View is the monthly magazine of IAPSS. It includes news and opinion articles written by both members and non-members of IAPSS from around the world. It is published as a PDF document on the IAPSS website on the 1st of each month. Previously edited by Giselle Quintenla (Argentina) and Dylan Kissane (Australia), the current editor is Thomas Bobinger (Germany).
Politikon: The IAPSS Journal of Political Science is a fully peer reviewed academic journal. Managed by an international Editorial Board (which, in 2006/07, includes representatives from Australia, Denmark, Italy and Romania) and drawing on internationally recognised reviewers, the journal is published twice annually. One issue is exclusively published online while the other is published online and in hard copy.
IAPSS also maintains a blog: The IAPSS Telegraph.
