Interstate 189 (abbreviated I-189) is the only spur on the entire length of Interstate 89. The highway runs approximately one mile from exit 13 to US7 in South Burlington. The Highway is a busy route to a thriving commercial district along Shelburne Road as well as the major connector between Interstate 89 and points along the western side of Vermont south of Burlington. There were at one time more grand plans for the highway. It was to continue North into the city of Burlington along the waterfront and service an industrial area. Construction was delayed due to the presence of a toxic barge canal and eventually cancelled as the city largely left behind its industrial past in favor of tourism in the 1980's. Future plans include a new two-lane road connecting Interstate 189 to downtown Burlington. At the present time there is considerable abandoned roadway just beyond the Route 7 interchange.
