Into the Labyrinth (TV series)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Into the Labyrinth is a British children's television series made for ITV by HTV between 1981 and 1982. Three series were produced and directed by Peter Graham Scott, totalling 21 half-hour episodes (including ad breaks).
The series was based around the struggle of two feuding sorcerors, Rothgo (Ron Moody) and Belor (Pamela Salem), for possession of a power source known as the Nidus and their attempts to find the device travelling through time. The first two seasons followed a group of children (Phil, Helen and Terry) who Rothgo sent after the Nidus. In the third and last season, Rothgo was replaced by Lazlo (Chris Harris), and this time only Phil chased a different power source, called the Scarabeus. The series became memorable for its catchphrase "I deny you the Nidus!", which Belor snarled at the end of each episode, causing the Nidus to disappear to a new time and location, just when the children had found it!
Some of the Labyrinth scenes were shot on location in the Cheddar Gorge caves. Most of the historical escapades were studio based around the same cave sets, which were redressed for each time period.
The solo voice that sings the haunting theme of Into the Labyrinth is Lynda Richardson, who also sings the main melody line of the Children of the Stones theme. Patrick Dromgoole was the executive producer and Sidney Sager wrote the music for both of these series.
The three child actors continued acting as adults. Simon Beal now acts under the stage name Charlie Caine, and had a small role in Bridget Jones's Diary. Lisa Turner had a lead role in the UK drama Bad Girls. Simon Henderson played Eddie Hunter in EastEnders.
