Inverness, Nova Scotia

Inverness (Scottish Gaelic Baile Inbhir Nis) is an unincorporated community located on the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Inverness County (Cape Breton Island), Nova Scotia, Canada. As of 2001, the population was 1,702.
The area's economic growth started with the opening of a coal mine by MacKenzie and Mann in 1890. Several more mines opened in and near Inverness during the early 20th century, but all were closed by 1958. Main industries today include fishing and tourism. Inverness was founded in 1904 and celebrated its Centeniel in 2004. In 2005 they closed down the Inverness Education Centre and moved their grades over to the Inverness Academy.
