Kai Michael Hansen è nato ad Amburgo, Germania, il 17 gennaio 1963 ed è il chitarrista e cantante della band power metal Gamma Ray da lui fondata nel 1989. In passato Hansen è stato co-fondatore, chitarrista e cantante della band Helloween, ed è ritenuto da molti appassionati la figura più importante nel panorama power metal europeo.
