Progettato come reazione ottimistica alle musiche del precedente Fables of the Reconstruction, i R.E.M scelgono un nuovo produttore al quale affidare le canzoni, si tratta di Don Gehman, che li porta negli studios di Belmont, nello stato dell'Indiana.
