Rakim (William Griffin Jr.) è nato il 28 Gennaio 1968 a New York in Wyandanch, un ghetto di Long Island. La sua adolescenza è particolarmente influenzata dalla black music. A 12 anni comincia a rappare i suoi primi freestyle. A 16 anni si converte alla religione islamica e cambia il suo nome in Rakim Allah. A 17 anni incontra Eric Benét. Nell'anno seguente registra il suo primo singolo: Eric B. Is President sotto etichetta Zakia che diventa subito uno dei più ascoltati.

Il loro primo album si chiama Paid In Full che viene pubblicato nel 1987 dalla Island Records è composto da 10 tracce di cui 3 strumentali. Riscuote subito un grande successo e viene definito dalla stampa come il più grande M.C. della storia della musica hip hop.

Nel 1992 lascia il suo compagna Eric Benét e la casa discografica MCA. A questo punto subisce molte azioni legali legate al suo scindimento del contratto che durano 5 anni. Nel 1997 firma con la Universal pubblicando alcuni album: The 18th Letter e The Master. Il poco successo avuto da 'The Master' provoca la rovina del contratto tra la Universal e Rakim fino allo scioglimento dello stesso che nel 2001 firma con la Aftermath. Nel giugno del 2003 dopo l'uscita di nuovi singoli e a pochi giorni dall'uscita del suo ultimo album il suo manager afferma che Rakim ha lasciato la Aftermath.
