J.R. Chandler
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Adam Chandler, Jr. is a character on the soap opera All My Children. He is currently played by actor Jacob Young. Since his teenage years, the character has been commonly known by the nickname "J.R.", a variation of the suffix "Jr."
As the son of Adam Chandler and the great nephew of Palmer Cortlandt, J.R. binds the two longtime enemies to each other for life (as does his rarely-seen older cousin, Ross Chandler).
[edit] Childhood years
Wealthy tycoon Adam Chandler hired Dixie Cooney -- the niece of his long time enemy Palmer Cortlandt -- as a servant. As time went on, Adam pursued Dixie for the purpose of producing an heir to the Chandler fortune. She gave birth to a son, Adam, Jr. or Junior, as he was called, in 1989. But Dixie didn't love Adam, because she was in love with Tad Martin. She also wanted custody of her son, as did Adam. Adam finally decided to marry Dixie and leave his then-wife Brooke English. But soon after they married, Adam put a plot in motion to gain sole rights to Junior. He had her committed to a mental institution. Tad soon figured out the devious plot and helped her escape. Tad & Dixie married in 1989.
Just a year later, Tad was declared dead when he and Billy Clyde Tuggle were involved in an explosion on a bridge. He would be out of Junior's life for three years, until Brooke helped him return to Pine Valley in 1993. He had been living in Los Angeles under the name "Ted Orsini". Tad & Dixie remarried in 1995, but again, their marriage wouldn't last. In 1996, Tad kissed Liza Colby, with Junior seeing it. He told Dixie, who promptly divorced Tad. Dixie then took Junior and moved to Pigeon Hollow.
Adam would soon sue for custody rights to Junior, which he won. Soon, Lee Hawkins kidnapped Junior and his half sister Hayley. They would eventually escape, with Hayley helping Junior Tad & Dixie would marry for a third time in 1999. This time, Adam tried to put a power play into motion. Tired of Tad's influence over Junior, Adam tried to ship him off to boarding school. Tad & Dixie were able to find out in time.
[edit] Young adulthood
Over the years, J.R. (asking to be called that instead of Junior) would befriend the two daughters of Erica Kane, Kendall Hart and Bianca Montgomery. The trio became very close throughout their young adult years. J.R. also got to know his step half brother Jamie Martin, who was the son of Tad & Brooke. These were calm years for J.R. He entered high school and formed a band, dubbed DreamStreet. But like everything else, the good times didn't last.
Dixie began to get involved with David Hayward, which helped send J.R. out of control during his school years. He began to hang around with a tough crowd at school. He paid another classmate to write a term paper for him. He even used foul language directed at his own mother. Eventually, it all led to J.R. getting high on ecstasy, and crashing a car he was driving into a guardrail, nearly killing himself, Hayley and her unborn child. He was sentenced to community service and counseling.
The bad times got worse. J.R. met Frankie Stone while walking through the park one night. The two shared a joint and Frankie brought J.R. to her room where she was staying with Opal. They were caught in bed by Bianca, Frankie's girlfriend. Shortly after, Frankie was murdered. J.R. was declared a witness. Meanwhile, he watched as both of his parents experienced their own problems. Tad & Dixie seemed on the road to divorce again. Adam & Liza also were going through unhappiness. It was so much for one teenage boy to handle.
In 2002, he was dealt with another big blow, perhaps the biggest. Dixie left J.R. in the care of Tad while she left for Switzerland. Months later, she was killed in a car crash while carrying Tad's unborn baby girl. Now J.R. felt all alone in the world, and clashed with his adult figures. He became closer with Kendall, despite the large gap in their ages. J.R. happily brought Kendall to the Martin Christmas party, just to see the reactions that the couple got. Eventually, both realized that they didn't feel any long-lasting emotions to each other and broke it off.
[edit] Leaving Pine Valley
After that, J.R. met and fell for Laurie Lewis, who seemed to be cut from the same mold as him. She was confused and mysterious. Her mother was dead, and her father worked at Pine Valley High as a janitor. J.R. began to spend a great deal of time with Laurie, and even ditched an interview with Harvard University in order to spend more time with her. Adam and Laurie's father tried to stop the romance, despite Tad's reluctance to do so. The hatred from their fathers only fueled the teenager's passions. But Adam came up with another one of his devious plots to break up the couple. He paid for a full education to Harvard...for Laurie. J.R. couldn't believe his father's actions, and demanded that Laurie turn down the offer. But Laurie refused, having always figured that she would be denied a first class education. This was the trick in breaking up the couple.
Eventually, Laurie kissed Jamie, who had been a friend to her during the whole ordeal. Weeks passed, and J.R. realized his stupidity towards Laurie in the situation. The two made up at the opening of FUSION, the comestics company that was run by Kendall and her friends. While this was happening, Jamie's ex-girlfriend Joni, feeling bitter about losing him, made her move. She told J.R. about this kiss between Jamie & Laurie. J.R. was too stunned to do anything about it. Instead, he ran away and told no one where he was going. After a few weeks, Adam found out through PIs that J.R. was working on a cargo ship. J.R. wanted to get away from Pine Valley to clear his head and not have to deal with the problems he had faced. It would be months until he would return.
[edit] J.R.'s return
In October 2003, Tad and Adam, angry at each other for all of their problems with each over the years nearly came to blows in the middle of the bar, The Pit. Suddenly, J.R. appeared, unannounced. Adam was happy to see his son return, but soon changed his mind when J.R. had met, fallen in love with, and married a young girl that he had met just three weeks prior to his return in Pine Valley. The young woman Babe Carey, had already made her mark on Pine Valley just a night before. Drunk, Babe met Jamie and took his virginity. This became a secret shared by Jamie & Babe.
J.R. revealed that he had met Babe on a foggy night in San Diego. She was at the end of a dock, crying. Believing that she would take her own life, J.R. began to talk to her. Babe said that no matter how big her problems were, she would never commit suicide. Thus began the rocky storybook romance between J.R. & Babe. Adam tired to break up the marriage with the help of Mary Smythe. He believed that Babe was only interested in the Chandler fortune, set to go to J.R. But Adam & Mary were unable to tear apart the couple. Eventually, Adam found out about Babe sleeping with Jamie. He tried to have Jamie help break up the couple, but that didn't work. It was also revealed that Babe was still married to Paul Cramer, and the marriage was still valid.
[edit] Baby switch
In 2004, the producers of All My Children and One Life to Live decided to do a crossover storyline. Babe found herself pregnant, and didn't know if the father was J.R. or Jamie. She soon found herself in the middle of a thunderstorm with an equally pregnant Bianca. They were trapped in a cabin. Babe called Paul, a doctor in Llanview to bring a helicopter, rescue both her and take them to a hospital. Paul initially refused but then agreed.
He arrived, and helped Babe deliver her baby. Bianca also delivered her baby. He then gave Babe an unknown medicine to leave her groggy. He staged a helicopter crash. When Babe awoke, Paul told her that her baby had been killed during the crash. However, the Chandler family soon arrived and threatened to harm Paul if anything had happened to Babe's child. Paul changed the story to say that Bianca's baby was one that had been thrown from the helicopter. Paul had hidden Babe's baby son in another nearby cabin, in hopes of giving it to his sister Kelly who had longed for a child. Bianca's baby girl was given to Babe, who named the girl Bess, leaving the Kane and Montgomery families to grieve over the loss of the infant.
Meanwhile Babe was starting to get increased 'feelings' that she had delivered a boy. With the help of her mother Krystal Carey, she discovered that Bess was really Miranda, the daughter that Bianca had given birth to. But Krystal helped convince her that the baby was better off with J.R. & Babe. Babe left Bianca to grieve.
J.R., angry over the secret that Babe and Jamie had kept about their night of passion, decided to gain custody of Bess. J.R.'s main plan now was to paint Babe as an unfit mother. He drugged Babe in hopes she would sleep with Jamie again but something went wrong and Babe was hospitalized. This made J.R. realize he may have gone too far, but he would not give up on trying to protect his little girl. Unknown to him, Jamie suspected J.R. of drugging Babe and told Babe, who in turn told J.R. J.R. needed to protect himself and told the drug dealer, Seth Phelps, to implicate Jamie as the culprit. Jamie was later convicted and sent to jail, where he ended up getting stabbed.
Babe decided to test J.R. with the help of Bianca and staged an affair to have J.R. show his real colors, which he did. Babe, facing the truth that J.R. was no longer in love with her, relinquished custody of Bess and left town with a newly released Jamie. Unknown to J.R., Babe had discovered that their son was truly alive and being raised by Paul's sister. She and Jamie devised a plan to kidnap the boy and go on the run with him. J.R. celebrated his victory until he read a letter Babe had left behind. The letter detailed the truth about Bess, that she was actually the late Miranda Montgomery, and their son had died in the helicopter crash. J.R. told Bianca what the letter said and thinking it was one of J.R.'s lies, she ignored him. That helped J.R convince himself that it was one of Babe's many lies to hurt him. When Babe learned that Bianca hadn't gotten Miranda back, she contacted her and enlisted Bianca's help in luring J.R. down to Florida with Bess.
Bianca and J.R. went to a Miranda Montgomery Foundation fundraiser in Florida, where J.R. spotted Babe. He followed her to a deserted warehouse, only to be locked inside and taunted by his brother Jamie with the news of his child's death and the fact that Babe was going to reveal the truth about Miranda to Bianca. J.R. got angry and hit Jamie in the head with a pipe and was freed from the warehouse by Kendall. Their brotherhood was over. When J.R. returned to his hotel room, Bianca was waiting. She was holding Miranda after finally being told the truth and seeing Babe's son, who Babe was calling James. J.R. and Bianca got into an argument on the terrace because J.R refused to believe that Bess was Miranda. Bianca lost her balance and fell to the ground below. Bianca fell into a coma and J.R.'s secret was safe for one more day.
J.R. returned to Pine Valley with "Bess" completely convinced that he would get to keep her. Unknown to him, Adam had given Erica permission to run a DNA test on the baby. Feeling the walls starting to close in on him, J.R. decided that it was time to leave town, but was intercepted at the last moment by Erica, Adam, Tad, and company with the truth. In his getaway vehicle, he pronounced the death of his son, mother, and his father...Tad. Handing Bess over, J.R fell into a deep depression and spent all his time in the nursery mourning the loss of his two children. Finally after a couple of weeks, J.R. emerged with an idea in his head, and by simply tricking Bianca into telling him the truth, J.R. found out that his son was alive and that the people he thought cared about him wanted him to believe he was dead.
J.R. sent his private investigators out to find Babe and Jamie, who were being helped by Liza. Getting a major lead, J.R. flew down to New Orleans right before Babe and Jamie's trip to Venezuela and confronted them. The police arrived and forced Babe to hand over the child, a baby boy, to J.R. In J.R.'s arms was the newest heir to the Chandler fortune, Adam III. J.R. eventually won sole custody for Adam III even against dozens of people saying that he would be an unfit father.
[edit] Betrayal, Distrust, and Courtroom Drama
J.R. and Babe eventually divorced, a situation that was forced by the "Baby Switch" storyline of 2004. But, a drunk J.R. then got behind the wheel of his car, where Babe tried to keep him from driving. She was unsuccessful, and a speeding J.R. soon hit Amanda Dillon. Babe shocked J.R. when she confessed to driving the car, protecting him from jail. This endeared Babe to J.R., and the two slowly grew closer. J.R., not fully trusting Babe, continued to test her loyalty and Babe passed every test. J.R. finally confessed his love for Babe. By this time, Babe had genuinely fallen for J.R. again and told him so.
Then, Babe and Little Adam were kidnapped by Janet Dillon, who made it appear as if Babe had run off with her son. A furious J.R. had his trust in Babe shattered again and began drinking, going so far as to hold Krystal at gunpoint in order to find Babe. Babe's innocence was proven when she was rescued from Janet, and she forgave J.R. for doubting her. The two remarried. J.R. was rocked when he discovered his long estranged mother Dixie Cooney was still very much alive. When he learned that she chose to stay away for four years and refused to say why, he shut down. Drinking heavily, his feelings of betrayal transferred onto Babe. J.R. began to believe that Babe really didn't love him and was using him to gain custody of their son. Fueled by alcohol and anger, J.R. temporarily lost control and set a trap to kill Babe. However, Kendall was caught in the trap instead and fell into a coma while pregnant. Babe soon realized that J.R. had tried to murder her and confronted him on it.
J.R. was arrested and put in jail. He remained bitter at everyone, especially Babe. He felt Babe betrayed their love. When Adam refused to pay his bail, J.R. believed he was all alone. His uncle Stuart paid his bail and the two went on a tour of Pine Valley. J.R. learned that throughout all his troubles, Babe and Jamie still loved him while Dixie blamed herself for J.R.'s problems. J.R. decided to be a man about it. He confessed to Babe about setting the trap for her, but hurting Kendall instead, and endangering her unborn baby. At first, Babe was skeptical at the new J.R., but J.R. was willing to go to prison for his sins. Just when it appeared that J.R. was to be sent to prison for ten years, Babe, urged by Dixie, told the courtroom that she lied about J.R.'s actions before. It was all a mistake. J.R. was in shock, but Babe stood by him. Even when Kendall awoke from her coma and tried to testify that J.R. had confessed while she was unconscious, it was not enough. J.R. was set free, while various citizens of Pine Valley including Kendall, Erica Kane and Ryan Lavery vowed to take revenge on the couple. J.R. and Babe set out to make their relationship work, despite the hatred of other people in the All My Children world.
[edit] A shaky road to redemption
J.R. soon found out that life wouldn't be very simple now that he was a free man. Kendall, Erica, Ryan and Zach Slater wouldn't make it easy for him or Babe. Babe had to put up with verbal abuse at FUSION. Also, J.R. found out about his missing baby sister Kate Martin, the daughter Dixie had given up to Greg Madden years before. He and Jamie became obsessed with finding her.
Their search became harder when Madden went missing. He was buried alive by an unknown person. During the weeks Madden was missing, J.R. and Jamie tried to put pressure on Madden's son, Josh, who had a wandering eye for Babe. They even hung him from a hook in a freezing meat locker. Unfortunately, Babe got in the way and became the one trapped inside. When J.R. found her, he promised that he would never put her in harm's way again. But J.R. was about to get a shock.
A tiny earthquake hit Pine Valley and caved in the top of the coffin that Greg Madden was buried in. It suffocated Madden. Colby Chandler, J.R.'s younger sister on the run from her possessive mother, ran over the burial spot while on the run from the police. The body was discovered. Right away, Josh Madden blamed J.R. Babe tried to defend him, but had her doubts. Adam tried to get Dixie to take the blame. All the while, J.R. maintained his innocence in the matter. But certain people weren't willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Josh and Kendall both agreed to team up and take down J.R. for his actions.
Between worrying about a blackmail attempt from Colby on him and the budding frienship taking place between Babe and Josh Madden, J.R. had to also worry about the police investigation into Greg's death. And when Colby and Babe found a copy of Greg Madden's last words, J.R. had Babe believing he was innocent. He promised not to reveal the tape since it would help no one find his little sister Kate, and instead cause pain to Josh and all the Kane Women. But in true Chandler Fashion, J.R. shocked everyone in Pine Valley when he released the tape to a packed house at ConFusion, including his wife and Josh, who found out he was the son of Erica Kane and her husband at the time Jeff Martin. It was a pregnancy she had thought was aborted. Babe, pissed as hell at J.R. and feeling sorry for Josh, ran after Josh. She tried to get through to him, but they took off in his plane. They promply crashed on a small island where the two bickered.
[edit] Winning Babe back
After J.R., Jamie and Julia found Josh and Babe on the island, they returned to Pine Valley. For weeks after, J.R. and Babe tried to rebuild their relationship. They also had to deal with the Sweet 16 birthday party of Colby, which was a highly publicized affair. In addition, the Pine Valley Police were trying to force Tad's hand in revealing the truth about what he really saw the night Greg Madden went missing/was buried alive. Tad was in a tough spot: testify against the woman he loved, Dixie, or let the man he had come to know as a son as well as his real son Jamie pay. Tad decided to testify against Dixie and Zach Slater, but was stopped by her brother Del Henry. J.R. was crushed by the actions of Tad.
Meanwhile, Josh and Babe grew closer as Josh tried to understand his adoptive father Greg. Their relationship almost drove a wedge forever between J.R. and Babe. But in the end, Babe decided to stay with J.R. She fired Josh from ConFusion. J.R. was left feeling he had won the war with Josh Madden. Meanwhile, David Heyward planned the Chandler Family downfall by revealing the affair between Babe and Josh.
At first, J.R. refused to believe the allegations. Even Josh denied them. But later, Josh admitted to J.R. that he had slept with Babe. Days later, when Babe told him that it was true, J.R. went off the deep end. He went to Josh's hotel room while Josh was out, drinking the entire bar and getting very drunk. Despite the efforts of Bianca, J.R. had revenge on his mind. But when Bianca and Erica refused to let him leave through the door in order to hurt someone, he went for the second option. He jumped through a window and crashed to the patio below, resulting in being knocked unconscious.
[edit] On the mend
After J.R. jumped through the window, Josh found him. He immediately started to work on him, despite their hatred. He was able to save him. When he returned to Babe with J.R.'s blood on him, she immediately thought J.R. had tried to hurt Josh. When Josh told her that it was J.R.'s blood, she completely changed her opinion and rushed to the hospital. During J.R.'s recovery in the hospital, he hated Babe. She betrayed his trust. In pain because of a broken pelvis, J.R. concluded he was an addict and demanded to be taken off of pain medication.
He refused to forgive Babe. Meanwhile, Jamie made sure she stayed away. Adam told Dixie to move back to the Chandler mansion to be with her son. He also allowed Babe to stay for the sake of Little A. After J.R. moved home, he tried to have Adam throw Babe out. Slowly, J.R. and Babe began to repair the damage their marriage had taken. When the murders at Fusion started to occur, J.R. hired a bodyguard for her. Even though he remained somewhat isolated from her, the couple had started the healing process. At the same time, his half-sister Colby planted a camera in Josh's hotel room, in case Josh and Babe decided to renew their affair. When she told Adam and J.R., J.R. allowed it in order to see if Babe was sincere in trying to repair their marriage.
Babe's bodyguard told J.R. that she and Josh kissed on New Year's Eve, which was instigated by Josh. J.R. also found out that they were at the Valley Inn with the rock star Zarf/Zoe. Immediately, J.R. thought that Babe and Josh were still seeing each other so he called his lawyer to find out how to get full custody of Little Adam. Meanwhile, Kendall tried to carry out her half of a plan she made with Josh, and tried to get her one-time friend J.R. to come to his senses and dump Babe (so Josh could have her). She found out that Colby planted a camera in Josh's hotel room, but she promised not to say anything as long as J.R. only used it to get Little A away from Babe.
[edit] The Satin Slayer storyline
The Satin Slayer had already targeted some of the women of FUSION: Erin Lavery, Simone Torres, and Danielle Frye (who was able to survive). The only women left in the company that were targets were Kendall and Babe. Although it appeared that the killer was connected to Babe by skipping over her to get to Kendall, he/she struck the Chandler Family. Poison was injected into a batch of peanut butter, which was used for pancakes. Although Babe was going to eat the pancakes, she didn't. Instead, Dixie ate the poisoned pancakes and died in the hospital with Tad by her side.
J.R. was devastated and angry at the world. His mother was taken from him again. At the same time, he started to carry out her final wish. While dying, she told him the truth- that Krystal was carrying Tad's baby, and not Adam's. J.R. used this for leverage against Babe. He caught Babe & Josh kissing in the shed, as Josh was preparing to leave Pine Valley. He then decided to continue with his divorce and custody case against Babe, despite having started to come back around to reconciliation.
J.R. confronted Babe with the news about Krystal & Tad's baby, and forced her to choose: either she sign a document relinquishing her custody and all claims to Little Adam permanently or he would tell Adam the truth about Krystal & Tad's baby. Babe was devastated when J.R. charged that she should've died instead of Dixie. In the parking garage of Chandler Enterprises, Babe's bodyguard was killed and Babe was attacked by the Satin Slayer. J.R. was skeptical when he first heard the news, but broke down when he realized the truth. Babe was declared dead in the operating room.
[edit] Mourning Babe
It was revealed that although Babe was attacked by the Satin Slayer, she didn't die. Instead, she was saved by Josh, with help from Kendall, Zach, Jackson Montgomery, his grandfather Joe Martin and his father Jeff Martin. They slowed down her heart-rate, causing her to go in a coma and then moved her to Zach's casino. Josh appeared to skip town.
Instead, J.R. saw him and confronted him one more time. J.R. left, and broke down in the park, where he found Zarf, who had been beaten badly by the Satin Slayer. Instead of helping Zoe or telling anyone, he left her in the park, raising the ire of Bianca.
J.R. began to help Tad, Jamie and Aidan search for the Satin Slayer. It was finally revealed that the Satin Slayer was Alexander Cambias, Sr., Zach's biological father. He had faked his death in 2003 and had been keeping tabs on Pine Valley for months. He was angry with his son Zach/Alexander Cambias Jr. for faking his death at the age of eighteen.
So far, other than the people that helped save and hide Babe, only Erica and Krystal know that she's alive. She doesn't want J.R. to know because of what his long-term reaction would be. Meanwhile, J.R. continues to mourn the loss of his true love.
However, Erica being Erica, decided to tell J.R. the truth and went to the Chandler mansion to tell him right away. Tad just happened to be there when she did. The three of them rushed to the casino. After trying to talk Josh out of his plan to help Babe run away with her son and leave J.R. for good, Erica finally confessed to him that she told J.R. that Babe is still alive. Josh was extremely and understandably angry at her for this and immediately went to Babe's room only to find J.R. at her bedside. He was trying to convince her that he was a "changed man" and would never hurt her again. J.R. thanked Josh for saving Babe from the Satin Slayer. Josh left the room and J.R. continued to convince Babe how truly sorry he was for how he had treated her before her "death" and how much he wanted her back. He also assured her that Krystal's secret was safe with him.
Krystal decided to tell her secret to Adam, which very much upset him. Adam declared that J.R. was no longer his son. J.R. vowed to help Babe and Krystal, even hiring Jack Montgomery as their lawyer in an insurance fraud charge that Adam laid on both. J.R. continues to struggle to win back Babe as she has made it clear she doesn't want a life with him anymore.
