[edit] Professional
I am a graduate student in linguistics. My two main areas of research are formal phonology (mostly in the framework of Optimality Theory), working on many languages but with special focus on Chinese, Yiddish, and a number of indigenous American languages, such as Kwakw'ala and Tohono O'odham; and computational linguistics, particularly CLIR issues (including the EXCLAIM system). I also have less central research interests in a number of other linguistic areas, such as diachronic change in Chinese and Yiddish and formal properties of ellipsis.
[edit] Political
I am also interested/active in history and politics. My interests in history include the history of revolutionary movements and Chinese history, especially the classical period, the Tang dynasty and modern Chinese history. I am currently engaged in a research project concerning the Cultural Revolution, organized by the wenge yanjiu xiaozu. Among other political activities, I am a steward in my union, UAW local 2865.
[edit] Personal
My other interests include cooking, fencing, feminism, punk rock, blues, cats, klezmer, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, linux (especially Gentoo), LaTeX and Perl.
