Jirass
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jirass (ジラース Jirāsu) (Alternate Spelling: Jiras. Keeyra in the US Version) Is a monster from Ultraman Episode 10: Mysterious Dinsaur Base He resembles Godzilla because the costume was made using two Godzilla suits. The body is from Godzilla vs The Thing, and the head is from Godzilla vs The Sea Monster. The only difference is that it was painted green and yellow, and had a frill around its neck. The materials were lended to Tsuburaya by Toho because the two companies had a close working relationship; particularly because Eiji Tsuburaya did both Godzilla and Ultraman features during the Showa Era.

[edit] History
When a lake where Jirass was housed went teeming with fish, the Science Patrol was called in. Soon, it is uncovered that a mad scientist, once thought lost while investigating Loch Ness, has actually created the monster Jirass. Upon discovery of the monster, and after some local fisherman try to poison the fish of the lake he resides in, Jirass goes on a rampage, killing the scientist who created him and threatening the Science Patrol. Ultraman soon appears, and a classic - if thinly disguised - Showdown for the Ages commences between Ultraman and a monster that very obviously resembles Godzilla.
The battle begins with a bit of humor, with Jirass roaring mightily and Ultraman waving his hand in front of his face, slightly disgusted by Jirass' bad breath. Jirass, evincing even more Godzilla-like behavior, seems amused by this and initiates a playful, if brief, rock-shooting contest. Jirass uses his breath-weapon to blast a thrown boulder out of the sky. Ultraman then uses his Specium Ray to destroy another boulder in flight, but twice over. With the preliminaries out of the way, the battle commences. After a few attacks by both combatants, Ultraman soon rips off Jirass's frill and uses it as a bullfighter would a cape to further enrage the monster. With the frill removed, it is now 'Godzilla vs Ultraman', for all intents and purposes. However, the battle never seems to measure up to that implied billing, as in very short order Ultraman kills Jirass with a quick handchop to the monster's midsection. After a moment of standing in place, Jirass dribbles a small amount of blood from his mouth and essentially keels over, apparently just as surprised as the audience that it is all over so quickly. Ultraman, in a sign of respect he never shows another enemy monster, places the frill back on Jirass's neck and pauses for a moment of silence over the fallen foe.
