Jose Chung is a fictional writer created by Darin Morgan, who appears in The X-Files episode "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" and the Millennium episode "Jose Chung's Doomsday Defense". Chung is played by Charles Nelson Reilly, and is the author of both the titular works in both episodes.
The two episodes Chung is in are among the more light-hearted of both programs. The character is a parody of Jack Cohen, who assisted the series in designing plausible extraterrestrials. In both series, Chung - who freely admits that he's exploring the paranormal incidents he writes about purely for the money - exists as a wittily sarcastic and cynical contrast to the more credulous, believing, serious-minded natures of the main protagonists of both series (in particular Fox Mulder); for example, he depicts certain individual aliens as constantly smoking something that looks like (and may be) tobacco and/or marijuana. In his first appearance, Chung turns his attention to UFO sightings and alien abductions, interviewing Scully and basing two characters from his novel, From Outer Space, on she and Mulder ("Diana Lesky" and "Reynard Muldrake", respectively; 'Reynard' being 'renard', French for 'fox').
In his second appearance, on Millennium, he turns his attention to the coming Millennium, concluding that it will bring about "1000 years of the same old crap." In the episode, Chung's help was enlisted on a case involving "Selfosophy", a Scientology-like religion formed by a former science fiction writer colleague of Chung's named Juggernaut Onan Gupta. Sadly, Chung is brutally murdered in this episode, by a madman obsessed with the prophecies of Nostradamus. David Duchovny, who plays Fox Mulder in the X-Files, appears in this episode on two movie posters, as a Hollywood star whose career was revitalized after adopting Selfosophy as a religion.
The Caligarian Candidate (taken from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and The Manchurian Candidate), and The Lonely Buddha, by Chung, are both favorite books of Scully's.
