TV.com summary |
Kenan & Kel is an American sitcom that aired on Nickelodeon from August 17, 1996 to April 1, 2000, totalling 61 episodes. One full-length TV movie was created, titled Two Heads Are Better Than None.
The idea for the show came from Brian Robbins, who thought that Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell had good chemistry on All That, though the creator of the show was Kim Bass. It was reminiscent of the classic comedic duo stylings of Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello, with Kenan being the straight man and Kel his comedic foil.
The opening song of the show, "Aww, Here It Goes", was performed by the rapper Coolio.

[edit] Main Characters
Kenan Rockmoore (played by Kenan Thompson)
- Kenan is Kel's best friend. Kenan is very smart, but he rarely accomplishes any schoolwork. Instead, he spends his time plotting schemes (such as transforming the grocery shop at which he works into a nightclub, or telling everybody that Kel has Extra-sensory perception). Though good-natured, he frequently angers his parents and boss. He is known to look up after something bad happens, and saying "Why?!". Every episode closes with Kenan thinking up a great scheme, telling Kel to find some random objects, and meet him at a random place and calling him a random name; one noteworthy example would be: "Kel, bring a pie, a Spice Girl, and a VHS player and meet me at the football field". This would confuse Kel. At the end of the final episode, Kel reveals to Kenan that he has got him everything he ever asked for, and the curtains then pull back to reveal the countless items that have been listed over the four seasons.
Kel Kimble (played by Kel Mitchell)
- Kel's full name is Kel Eienstein Hypothalmus Kimble, as heard in the episode "The Graduates". Kel is Kenan's dim-witted best friend. Kel is just a regular teen who loves orange soda with a passion. His most memorable line is, "Who loves orange soda? Kel loves orange soda...Is it true? Mmmm-hmmm...I do I do I doOOOOooo." Since his parents are rich, busy scientists, he visits and dwells in Kenan's house very often. He gives Kenan's father a very hard time by accidentally injuring him on most of his visits. Kel might resist following Kenan's schemes, but ultimately is included anyway. Supposedly, deep down inside, Kel is an ordinary teenager with his own ideas. His father is a rocket scientist and his mother is a brain surgeon, which raises the question of why Kel acts so unintelligently. However Kel did score a 98 on his intelligence test, where 90 counted as 'genius'. Kel is an incredible painter; he would also occasionally say long, intelligent sentences that would confuse Kenan. In the beginning and end of each episode, Kel always says his catchphrase: "Awwww here goes!"
Kyra Rockmoore (played by Vanessa Baden)
- Kyra is Kenan's younger sister. Kyra's biggest mission is telling on her brother Kenan, but she has devoted herself to Kel, having a massive crush on him. For most of season three and four, Kyra did not appear, even with scenes showing the whole family; she did, however, appear in the series finale and the TV movie. She often interrupted Kenan's response to her saying "I was talking to Kel!".
Roger Rockmoore (played by Ken Foree)
- Roger is Kenan and Kyra's father. Roger has to deal with Kel's daily visits; he always has to be on the watch for Kel. Adding to this, Roger is very short-tempered - mainly with Kel. This is mostly due to the fact that Kel often makes a sarcastic remark about Roger's baldness and tends to damage the Rockmoore house. Roger works at the main local airport as an air traffic controller. His catchphrase towards Kel is "Get outta here now, Kel!!!"
Sheryl Rockmoore (played by Teal Marchande)
- Sheryl is Kenan and Kyra's mother. Sheryl is described as kind, but she always seems to know what schemes Kenan and Kel are up to. She is also much more patient with Kel than her husband is. Sheryl is much more of a listener than a punisher; she'd rather talk out problems with Kenan than punish him, though she has demonstrated her anger in several episodes.
Chris Potter (played by Dan Frischman)
- Chris is the owner of the Rigby's grocery store and Kenan's boss. He lives with his mother, who is frequently mentioned throughout the show (his mother, however, never actually made an appearance on the program). While Chris, Kenan and Kel have some similar interests, Chris' main causes of trouble are the two of them. His character has also had dreams of being chased by a giant bunny, as shown in the season one episode "Mental Kel-Epathy".
[edit] Major characters
Sharla Morrison (played by Alexis Fields)
- Sharla was introduced as a new employee at Rigby's at the start of season three. In the show, Chris hired her because he felt Kenan needed more help around the store. While there, Sharla started to develop a crush on Kenan, and he developed a crush on her. However, they only both realized it during a prom at their high school. Their romance was not mentioned again for the remainder of the season or for the most part of season four (though Sharla and Kenan dated in one episode in the latter season).
Marc Cram (played by Biagio Messina)
- Marc was introduced in season three, and was an avid collector of watches. He lives with his parents and also excels at spelling, at times during conversation never mentioning a word by its name, but spelling it out (one such line is, "It looks G-R-E-A-T!"). His name is also an exact palindrome.
Mrs. Quagmire (played by Doreen Weese)
- Mrs. Ethel Quagmire was introduced in season one as an elderly customer at Rigby's. The character provided some light relief to the show during serious events. She has also "beaten" Chris Potter up on several occasions: in a season one episode, Chris Potter thought that Quagmire stole a tin of peanuts; following this, she "sucker-punched" him and called him a "Weasel". In the season two episode The Lottery, she entered the store hoping to purchase a lottery ticket, but Potter said the store was closing - she then held him up against the door, again calling him a "Weasel". The character disappeared in season three with no explanation.

1997/2000 - Image Awards: nominated Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson for "Outstanding Performance in a Youth or Children's Series/Special".
