Kendall, Florida

Kendall is a census-designated place and an unincorporated suburban community in Miami-Dade County, Florida, on the edge of the Florida Everglades. The community was named after Maj. Kendall, an executive of the British Land Company that had surveyed and mapped many areas of Florida. As of the 2000 census, the area had a total population of 75,226. Kendall is home to one of Miami's general aviation airports, the Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport. Some of her most famous residents include long-term resident Janet Reno, former U.S. Attorney General, whose parents built her home by hand; in addition, O.J. Simpson made his home in Kendall after his murder acquittal.

Kendall is located at (25.666781, -80.356533)GR1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the Kendall region has an approximate total area of 42.3 km² (16.3 mi²). 41.8 km² (16.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (1.35%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 75,226 people, 28,482 households, and 19,652 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,800.7/km² (4,664.8/mi²). There were 29,669 housing units at an average density of 710.2/km² (1,839.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 41.6% White, 4.45% African American, 0.14% Native American, 2.99% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.81% from other races, and 3.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 49.9% of the population.
Kendall is home to one of the largest Colombian-American populations in the State of Florida. Over 11,000 Colombians live in the area, mostly concentrated in the western fringes (West of the Florida Turnpike), where they make up over 60 percent of the population in certain neighborhoods (West Kendall, Royal Palms on 134th Ave. and the Hammocks). Interestingly enough, several White non-Hispanic enclaves do exist West of the Turnpike. The Devon Aire neighborhood is over 70 percent non-Hispanic White and its elementary school, Devon Aire Elementary, is heralded as the highest-scoring elementary school (on the statewide FCAT exam) in Miami-Dade county.
There were 28,482 households out of which 33.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% were married couples living together, 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% were non-families. 24.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the region the population was spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.4 males.
The median income for a household in the area was $51,330, and the median income for a family was $61,241. Males had a median income of $42,875 versus $31,416 for females. The per capita income for the area was $27,914. About 5.7% of families and 8.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.0% of those under age 18 and 10.9% of those age 65 or over.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools serves Kendall.
The first public school in Kendall was Kendall School, now renamed Kenwood K-8 Center. Kenwood is the site of the Kenwoods Hammock, a native forest planting which has become a world-renowned stop for birders.
Kendall is zoned to several high schools, including G. Holmes Braddock High School, Felix Varela High School, John A. Ferguson High School and Miami Killian High School in Miami and Miami Sunset High School in unincorporated Miami-Dade County.
Sunset Park Elementary School and Devon Aire Elementry also serves some of the Kendall area.
