Kenny Deuchar (born 8 June 1980) is a Scottish professional footballer currently playing for Northampton Town on loan from Gretna. In 2005, he equalled Jimmy Greaves' British record of six league hat-tricks in a season[1].
Deuchar was born in Stirling and started his career in footballing at Falkirk, but two leg breaks and other problems forced him to join East Fife. He led Fife to promotion, whilst working as a full time doctor (he is even rumoured to have had to come on at half-time in some games because he was seeing a patient - this is, however, unlikely due to the standard working patterns of British junior doctors[citation needed]), but he longed for full-time football.
He was offered a place at big spending Scottish Football League Third Division club Gretna, and signed immediately. In his first season he led Gretna to the Scottish Second Division smashing records along the way. He shattered the most goals in a season of 24 with an astounding 41, in 41 appearances, 9 of which he appeared as a sub[2]. During a friendly against Threave Rovers in 2006 he managed to score 11 goals in an 18-0 thrashing [3]. He has not completely left medicine behind, as he continued to work one day a week at a Scottish hospital while at Gretna.[4]
Jeff Stelling, host of Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday programme, always makes reference to "The Good Doctor" having scored a goal whenever Deuchar's name appears on the vidiprinter.
During the 2006-07 season, his appearances have been limited, and he had scored only one goal in Gretna's first 15 matches. On 1 December 2006, Gretna officially announced that Deuchar had requested a transfer.[5]
On January 31, 2007, he joined Northampton Town on loan until the end of the season[6].
On Saturday 24th February 2007 Kenny Deuchar scored his first goal for Northampton in their 3-0 victory over Rotherham, which was his first goal in English Football.
