Kingsbridge Heights, Bronx
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kingsbridge Heights, sometimes reckoned as separate from Kingsbridge proper, is a neighborhood in the West Bronx in New York City. It is characterized by a very high population density; along with adjacent Bedford Park, it is one of the Bronx's most densely settled neighborhoods.
Due to its unique location as a hub for close and easy public transportation (The Number 1, 4 and D NYC Subway lines; NYC Express Bus services to both the West and East sides of Manhattan), open space parks (Van Cortlandt, Ft. Independence), excellent public schools (CUNY Herbert Lehman College, The Bronx High School of Science, P.S. 95) and nearby shopping venues (the soon to be built "Kingsbridge Crossing Mall" located at 230th Street in 2007), the neighborhood has seen a huge increase in luxury rental and co-op building construction. Since September 11, 2001, Manhattan residents seeking safety as well as priced out of their home marketplace have been flocking uptown to this neighborhood.
Because of a synogauge located in the area, northern Kingsbridge Heights still has a significant Jewish population. Equally as big is the growing Hispanic population in southern Kingsbride Heights. Northern Kingsbridge Heights maintains a predominately White population, while central and south Kingsbride Heights maintains an extremely heavy Hispanic and Black population.
One of the main attractions of the neighborhood is the Jerome Park Reservoir that is a favorite for runners and naturalists. The perimeter of this reservoir is approximately 2.5 miles.
