University Heights, Bronx
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
University Heights is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of the Bronx . It is bounded to the west by the Harlem River, to the east by Jerome Avenue, to the north by Kingsbridge Road, and to the south by Burnside Avenue. It borders the Kingsbridge neighborhood to the north, the Fordham neighborhood to the east, the South Bronx immediately to the south, and the Inwood section of Manhattan to the west across the Harlem River.
The neighborhood takes it name from the hill where the New York University uptown campus was built in 1894, with the primary street being University Avenue, and its main intersection at University Avenue and Fordham Road. In 1973, NYU sold the campus to the City University of New York, who renamed the campus Bronx Community College, but the neighborhood name has remained.
