Klinean is taking a long wikibreak and will be back on Wikipedia when its moderators lighten up and provide more assistance (and less scolding) for image posting rules that apparently are different than they were 6 months ago!

It is suspected that this user might be a sock puppet or impersonator of Bigwhisker. Please refer to contributions for evidence. See block log and current autoblocks.

Thanks for uploading Image:Sasha_inline3.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images on Wikipedia is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. For a copyrighted image, you need the image source, copyright holder, an accurate license (and justification for that license, if necessary) and a detailed fair-use rationale. I don't understand what the problem is. I tried to fix the copyright issue, to clarify that the picture in question is a promo photo that is meant to be freely distributed. I thought I provided the image source, copyright holder, and detailed usage. I have encountered 100's of similarly-marked photos on Wikipedia...and those images aren't being banned. Please clarify why this one is unacceptable. Granted, I am something of a wiki newbie, but banning me for 24 hours without stating precisely what is wrong seems a little harsh. I am just trying to do what I find on other wiki entries. Thanks!

You aren't including the detailed fair-use rationales iirc. You do need a detailed hand-written fair-use rationale for each use of a copyrighted image on the Wikipedia, however, and I noted this above and the license text notes this as well. --Yamla 23:11, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

I guess I'm not clear as to what *specifically* is needed. Tell me what's unacceptable with the picture in question (image:JenniferMorrison HouseMD 02.jpg) under my 'fair use' explanation. Seems pretty detailed to me. What more do you need? I found this on another similar photo and attempted to do the same for this one; that was hasn't been blocked, so I assumed it was ok.

Hi, Klinean. Please, understand that images found on sonypictures.com are not promotional neither intend for wide distribution. According to the site's Terms of Use, "you shall not copy, capture, reproduce, perform, transfer, sell, license, modify, manipulate, create derivative works from or based upon, republish, upload, edit, post, transmit, publicly display, frame, link, distribute, or exploit in whole or in part the Site, the Site Content or...".

Please, consider adding the text {{db-author}} to the image description pages for all such images you've uploaded to Wikipedia, and some admin will get rid of the copyright problem.

Klinean, not all images found on the internet are intended for widespread use. Images from cbs.com are part of the site content and value, and shall not be used by others. Their Terms of Service says: "No material (including but not limited to the text, images, audio and/or video) (...) may be copied, reproduced, republished, uploaded, posted, transmitted, or distributed in any way..."

The same holds for images found on abc.go.com. Their Terms of Use says "No material from any WDIG Site or any Internet site owned, operated, licensed, or controlled by us may be copied, reproduced, republished, uploaded, posted, transmitted, or distributed in any way..."

NBC.com is also not a source for promotional images (from terms of use: "You may not modify, copy, reproduce, republish, upload, post, transmit, publicly display, prepare derivative works based on, or distribute in any way any material from the Service,"). Just like startrek.com Terms of use says "UNAUTHORIZED USE, COPYING, REPRODUCTION, MODIFICATION, REPUBLISHING, UPLOADING, DOWNLOADING, POSTING, TRANSMITTING, DISTRIBUTING OR DUPLICATING OR ANY OTHER MISUSE OF ANY OF THE MATERIAL IS PROHIBITED".

These images are intended to be the content of those websites and their use here is competitive.

Please, consider going through your images uplaods and adding {{db-author}} to all such images.

Hello!

Thanks for uploading some pictures to Wikipedia. I wanted to make sure you were aware of some of the requirements and good practices for uploaded images.

• Pick an image name.

When uploading an image, pick a file name that is descriptive, and unique. Remember that many images may be uploaded about the same topic, and remember that names are case sensitive.

• Source the image.

On the image description page, explain where the image came from. If you created the image yourself, then say so. If it's from the web, give a URL. If it's a screenshot of a movie or game, or a scan from a book, give the title.

• Provide copyright and license information.

This part is a little bit trickier, but it's very important. The copyright of the image generally belongs to whomever created it.

If it's a photograph you took, or an image you created (modifying an image that already exists doesn't count) in software like Photoshop or GIMP, then you own the copyright. To upload it to Wikipedia, you must agree to license it under the GFDL (which allows anyone to use it, but requires that they give credit to the original author and requires that any further edit to the image be licensed under the GFDL as well) or release it into the public domain (which allows anyone to use it for any purpose without restriction.) Do this by placing an appropriate tag on the image description page, like {{GFDL}} or {{PD-self}}. Be sure to mention that you created the image. If you're using {{PD-self}}, you may also want to use {{NoRightsReserved}}, since there is some dispute as to whether one may grant items into the public domain.

If you didn't create the image, or the copyright somehow belongs to another party (like a screenshot, which you might "create", but the copyright belongs to the author of the movie or video game), then you need to find another tag that describes the copyright status of the image. Images used on Wikipedia need to be free for our use and the use of sites which reproduce our content. This means that images cannot have a restriction such as "only for use by Wikipedia", or "for non-commercial use only", or "for educational use". Images without a free license may be usable in certain articles under fair use, but such a use should be justified on the image description page.

• Describe the image.

To another reader, the image may not be immediately understood. A caption in an article doesn't explain the image to a visitor who sees it on its image page. Put a brief explanation of what is in the image on the image description page, similar to what you might include in a caption on an article.
