KNON is a radio station transmitting on 89.3 FM, serving the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. KNON (rumored to stand for NON-commercial) is a non-profit, listener-supported radio station, deriving its main source of income from on-air pledge drives and from underwriting or sponsorships by local small businesses. KNON went on air on August 6, 1983 with 10,000 watts of power. In March 1990, KNON raised it's power to 55,000 watts. The signal covers a radius of approximately 60 miles from Cedar Hill. it extends from Mckinney, Hillsboro, Corsicana and from Ft. Worth to Greenville. In addition, a live web broadcast runs from the station's web site.
KNON is on the air 24 hours, seven days a week. The volunteer disc jockeys play their own music or conduct talk shows during specifically targeted programs to a variety of unique demographies.
KNON traces it's beginning to KCHU a non commercial FM that went on air August 29, 1975. KCHU operated until September 1977 when it went off air owing to financial shortfalls. The station remained silent through 1980 (license renewal year in Texas. Radio stations then operated on a three year license cycle.) At the same time, Criswell Bible Institute operated KCBI-FM from a downtown Dallas rooftop with a power of 1,500 watts on 89.3. They aspired to raise power and height and to relocate to the Cedar Hill, Texas tower farm, and faced limitations. They applied to take over the 90.9 spot of KCHU. A legal and FCC struggle ensued. The result was a swap of frequencies, a settlement of litigation, and return of KCHU (renamed KNON) to the air.
KNON went on air in 1983 from a site in West Dallas known as Chalk Hill. They moved to Cedar Hill (55,000 watts at 850 feet above average terrain using a fairly directional antenna vs. typical 100,000 watts at 1,600 feet non directional of other stations).
