Kunming Wujiaba International Airport
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kunming Wujiaba International Airport (IATA: KMG, ICAO: ZPPP) is an airport located in Kunming, Yunnan, People's Republic of China. Runway alignment: 21, 03. Runway Elevation 1840m above mean sea level. Runway length: 3800m. The airport is located 4 km southeast of metropolitan Kunming.
The airport is among the oldest airports in China, with a history which can be traced back over 100 years to the early 1900s, when Wujiba Airport was first built under the supervision of local warlord, General Tang Jiyao. During World War II, the airport was expanded to accomomdate the operations of the legendary "Flying Tiger" squadron led by U.S. Air Force Lieutenant (and later General) Claire Lee Chennault.
It is currently ranked 7th among China's civil airports in terms of annual aircraft movements, annual passenger flow, and cargo operations. By the end of 2006, the annual passenger flow at Kunming Wujiaba International Airport has reached a new record high of 14 million passengers.
Due to fast expansion of the metropolitan area and limited land availability, the growth of Kunming Wujiaba International Airport is likely to see major constraints in near future. Local government and the local airport authority have decided to move all operations to a new airport site, which is under planning, within 5 years.[1]
