Talk:Lacoste (company)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
a common misconception about Lacoste shirts is that they have an alligator on them, when, in fact, it's really a crocodile...
- Thanks, I changed it... Squash 05:03, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Actually it isn't REALLY a misconception, see the company's webiste. It's actually a very famous story that in fact he was called the Alligator. This is from the Lacoste website (http://www.lacoste.com/usa/main.html):
The true story of the "Crocodile" begins in 1927. René LACOSTE liked to recount how his nickname became an emblem recognized throughout the world.
"I was nicknamed "the Alligator" by the American press, after I made a bet with the Captain of the French Davis Cup Team concerning a suitcase made from alligator skin. He promised to buy it for me if I won a very important match for our team. The public must have been fond of this nickname which conveyed the tenacity I displayed on the tennis courts, never letting go of my prey!"
"So my friend Robert GEORGE drew a 'crocodile' which I then had embroidered on the blazer I wore on the courts.
So the drawing was a of a crocodile (though it looks more like an alligator, it's snout is rather short) but Lacoste himself was call the Alligator by the American press.
- Side note: recently, the Beauty & the Geek TV show had the question of what the Lacoste logo was. They gave the correct answer as "an alligator". I recently played Trivial Pursuit, and the correct answer was given as "a crocodile". --61.68.108.167 09:43, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Removal of the "Genuine Products"??
I found this section of the article very useful, as it has helped me personally spot fake Lacoste shirts. I would like to see it replaced, the person who deleted it didn't give a good enough reason as to why they did, their reasons sounded purely self centered. Colinspocket 22:06, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not the one who removed it but I agree to its removal. It's not about whether it's helpful or not, Wikipedia is not a manual (that's an actual guideline if I'm not mistaken). Also, it's dreadfully unencyclopedic.Mackan 00:37, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
