Latur (Marathi: लातुर) is both a district and an important city in Maharashtra, India. It has a vast table of land and is situated 636 metres above sea level. Latur is one of the leading commercial centers in Maharashtra and is a very fast growing city. It has been well known for its foodgrain trade and oil mills. Recently, it has evolved as an education center, primarily for secondary and higher secondary education. The district had a population of 2,080,285 of which 23.57% were urban as of 2001. [1]

The Latur District is in the south-eastern part of the Maharashtra state. Latur town is situated on the 18.7° latitude and 73.25° longitude. The district is situated on the Maharashtra Karnataka boundary. On the eastern side of the Latur is Bidar district of Karnataka, whereas Nanded is on the northeast, Parbhani on the northern side, Beed on the Northwest and Osmanabad on the western and southern side. The entire district of Latur is situated on the Balaghat plateau, 540 to 638 metres from the mean sea level.

Latur has an ancient history. It was home to a branch of Rashtrakutas which ruled the Deccan from year 753-973AD. It was, over the centuries, variously ruled by the Satavahanas, the Sakas, the Chalukyas, the Yadavas of Deogiri, the Delhi Sultans, the Bahamani rulers of South India, Adilshahi, and the Mughals. Later in the 19th century it became part of the independent princely state of Hyderabad. Earlier known as Naldurg tehsil, in 1905 it was merged with surrounding areas and renamed Latur tehsil, and became part of Osmanabad district. After independence and the merger of Hyderabad with the Indian Union, Osmanabad became part of Bombay Province. In 1960, with the creation of Maharashtra, it became one of its districts. On August 15, 1982, Latur was separated from Osmanabad to form a separate Latur district.

Latur has temples dedicated to Siddheshwar, Ramlingeshwar, Papivinash Bhuteshwar, Ram, Keshavaraj Datta and Ambabai. Latur has an airport of its own which is used for landing of private planes and helicopters. Though there are no commercial flights going out of Latur. Nearest airport is at Aurangabad, 290 km from the city.

Latur exprienced a devastating earthquake on September 30, 1993 which killed thousands and extensively damaged property.

Latur has developed as the best educational center in the state over the years. The educational culture of Latur has a long run from the primary education to the schooling and the most importantly in the inter college education (10+2 system).The landmark in the higher secondery examinations (H.S.C.)is practiced by the leading institutons of Latur. This special teaching technique is know as "LATUR PATTERN".

Latur Pattern: is a phrase that recently evolved in Latur. Latur Pattern has emerged as a gold standard for secondary and higher secondary education in Maharashtra. This technique of education has been widely adopted in other places due to its consistent and successful track record at producing excellent results. The emphasis is more on completing the course-work early in the year and then focusing on practising for the examinations. The professors are not just teachers, but also coaches, who take personal interest in each and every student and adapt the teaching style and practice examination regimen as per the capability of the students to cope. The latur pattern is now growing to rest of the state.

Thanks to the success of Latur Pattern, students from Latur have made it to the top institutes of India and have established their careers all over the world.

The Latur Pattern was born in the early nineties at Rajarshi Shahu College and Dayanand Science College, some of the most reputed colleges in the state of Maharashtra. The students of these colleges have consistently been toppers in state public examinations and more recently, in Engineering and Medical entrance examinations.

Apart from the two leading Jr. colleges; Latur is a center for so many different educational facilities like the higher educational institutions and professional training centers. Medical College, Latur. dayanand science college Govt. Polytechnic College, Latur To mention in Latur there is a Women's Polytechnic college, Agriculture college, Ayurvedic Medical College.

India's present Home Minister Shri Shivraj Patil Chakurkar is from Latur. He has won seven consecutive parliament elections from Latur. Also, Maharashtra State Chief Minister, Shri. Vilasrao Deshmukh is from Latur. Having both state and central representatives in high position has led to rapid development of Latur, making it one of the fastest growing cities in Maharashtra, latur city is capital of Maharashtra in politics. The drinking water problem is very acute in the city. The Municipal administration can provide the drinking water after the gap of ten days. The long awaited railway widening work is also on going with a speed of tortoise. People were having lot of hopes from this duo but wide vision and commitment towards the people is completely missing.

Latur District Latur district was carved out of erstwhile Osmanabad district on 1st May 1982. The district has been divided into ten talukas or blocks for administrative convenience. They are Latur, Renapur, Chakur, Ahmedpur, Jalkot, Udgir, Devani, Shirur-Anantpal, Nilanga and Ausa. The district administration is headed by District Collector. Presently Mr Rajeev Kumar Mital is Collector of the district. District Council or Zilla Parishad is the local self government headed by President Mr Gyanoba Ghumanwad and the executive head is Dr Praveen Gedam, CEO. At block levels, tahsildars are in charge of revenue administration and BDO are responsible for development works.
