Linguistics is the scientific study of human language.
Many aspects of language are studied, often independently, including sounds and their patterning, the structure of words, syntax, meaning, style and pragmatics. These are often approached from a theoretical perspective, but can also be examined historically. Also studied is the effect of society on language affect or language's relationship to psychology.
Applications of linguistics include language education, second language acquistition and computer-parsing of language.
