This is a list of internet slang that is specific to thread-based communication:
- Avi, Ava
- Avatar. The image displayed along with a username, representative of a particular user.
- B&
- "banned" ('b-and')
- B7
- "banned" (a corruption of "B&")
- B10
- "beaten" (used when one poster comments before another)
- BOT
- "back on topic" (used in forums)
- Bump
- resurrection of an old thread to the top page of a message board (also backronymed to "bring up my post")
- DFTT
- "don't feed the troll"
- ETA
- "edited to add"
- Flamer/Flaming
- the act of posting to mock or anger another, often between fanboys./one who writes inflammatory posts
- F(T)P
- "First (To) Post"
- FOTW
- "Freak of the week"
- FYP
- "Fixed your post"
- Godwin's Law
- dictates that "the longer a thread, the more likely someone will post a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler"
- GEBAPB
- "Get Eaten By A Polar Bear" (Friendly insult usually directed at Swedes, Finns, Norwegians and other igloo inhabitting Scandanavians)
- GTFO
- "get the fuck out" (used on 4chan and gaiaonline)
- IB(T)B
- "in before the ban"
- IB(T)L
- "in before the lock" (used in messageboards when a thread looks likely to be locked)
- IB4P
- "in before poll"
- IMG
- Image (from the HTML tag)
- ITT
- "In this thread" or "I'd tap that"
- IWHBTL
- "I was here before the lock"
- KTC
- "Kill the Caps" (referring to posts made exclusively in capital letters)
- LAUNWU
- "Laughing at you not with you"
- Lurker
- one who frequents a message board without participating in discussions
- M@d
- "mad mod" (a forum moderator who moderates unfairly)
- Mod
- "moderator"
- MPFO
- "missed porn freak opportunity" (in reference to tricking someone into clicking on a link to a Shock site)
- Necro-Post
- to bump a post that that is very old
- NSFW
- "not safe for work" (indicates that one should avoid accessing the labeled link from a workplace due to the presence of pornography or other unsuitable content)
- NT
- "no text" (used when posting an image, or when the thread's title conveys what the poster is saying)
- NWS
- "not work safe"
- OOT
- "out of topic" (used in forums)
- OT
- "off topic" (used in forums)
- Op
- "operator" (a moderator)
- OP
- "Original Post" or "Original Poster"
- OYATM
- "one year ago this month" (used in Usenet binary groups when posting content that has just recently become old enough to post)
- PIMF
- "preview is my friend" (used by someone who, having failed to preview, has just posted a comment with an embarrassing typo)
- Pips
- General term for the icons (often represented by stars) under an avatar+username which by their number give a rough estimate of post-count.
- Pix plz
- "Pictures Please" = A request for photographic evidence. Often used sarcastically.

- "post proof or recant"
- PPP
- "purge protection post"
- QFE
- "quoted for emphasis"
- QFT
- "quit fucking trolling," "quite fucking true" or "quoted for truth"
- QWP
- "quoted with permission"
- RBP
- "read before posting"
- RIFY
- "read if you like"
- RTFA
- "read the fucking article"
- RTFM
- "read the fucking manual"
- RVV
- "reverted last edit due to vandalism"
- RYCT
- "regarding your comment to [name]"
- RTFP
- "read the fucking post" (advice for posters who comment without doing so)
- SFW
- "safe for work" (material that may safely be viewed in one's office)
- Sig
- Signature: A suffix region added automatically to a user's posts (can usually be deactivated but is active by default).
- SigBan
- Signature Banner (a banner or horizontally elongate image displayed in a user's signature area.
- SITWAP
- Sorry If This Was Already Posted
- SLAP
- Sounds Like A Plan.
- SSIA
- "subject says it all"
- Sticky
- A thread given higher priority by a moderator / admin, allowing it to remain at the top of a board, above all non-sticky threads.
- TINWOP
- "thread is nothing without pictures"
- TITS OR GTFO
- Typically meaning that the posters topic needs naked pictures to make the topis interesting
- TLDR (or tl;dr)
- "too long, didn't read"
- Troll
- one who deliberately stirs up trouble or posts false information or an insult for someone with a different opinion than you
- TTT
- "to the top" (a reply used on a message board thread to resurrect a thread to the top of the list)
- VILLA (Aka Villa)
- Not an acronym, but a derogatory term used to describe those who are deemed useless at a game, of no use to the team, and/or unwanted in a social group. Usually takes the form of Dexers in Ultima Online.

- "whatever, tell it to your blog"
- YOYOW
- You Own Your Own Words, you are responsible for what you post and/or may assert copyright and object to redistribution out of context.
Not all of these are very common. Such as YOYOW and SFW, most people won't understand what you're talking about.
